“Would at least 50% of us get a Job?”

This was one of the many questions asked by students at a leading Engineering College. I was invited to deliver a guest lecture at my alma mater and was hoping to share all the latest tech but this question forced me to rethink. There is a greater and deeper issue that needs addressing, once and for all.

This is why I came up with this ready reference. I am hoping that you, the job seeker and a person dreaming of a successful career in the Software industry, will benefit from my experience & learnings, documented in this guide.

I have organized this guide to mirror the natural progression of a successful Software Engineer. This gives me the right context to provide specific guidance for the various stages in your career path. This also helps you, the reader, to get industry insights and secrets to keep progressing, keep growing.

Chapter 1 speaks about all the right stuff you need to do to ensure you land your very first job. Being selected during campus drives is the easiest way to get into this industry. Thus this chapter becomes a must read especially if you are wondering about your first job or need more confidence.

Wondering what’s expected from you as an intern / Associate Software Engineer? Chapter 2 delves into this and reveals how to meet industry expectations.

And you have been promoted. Now what? Expectations are very different from a senior member of the team. Chapter 3 talks about how you can keep growing in this vital role and keep meeting expectations of your manager.

And now the mid-life crisis. At this experience level in your career, you will be faced with two options. Management or technical? Which path to take? Which path will bring in most money? Chapter 4 spills the beans on these questions and more.

Chapter 5 gives further guidance on how you could continue to improve and grow as a Software Architect.

Chapter 6 tries to give some general guidance on your next steps.
