After leaving behind the ashes of her home in Victorian London, Amelie Trace comes to a rural village to trade her governess' gown for a schoolmarm's attire and rebuild her life. When she comes across an odd notation in the schoolhouse, the young widow finds the rumours of monsters stalking in the woods to be true, and that she has become a threat in a war beyond her ken.
Far in the future, Phantom Jack and his cadre of heroes prepare for battle against brother-gods feeding on human suffering. They seek the Ghost Notes, a score of magical music, last seen in a rural English village. With the Notes, mortals may challenge the song of the gods, but as the strength of the brothers dwindles, their sister's grows. Before their final challenge, Jack and the cadre must decide whether to let the gods fight on and change nothing, or end them and risk releasing the fiercest of the three, sealed away by her brothers for fear of powers capable of ending humanity altogether.
A tale of friendship, romance and Speed Metal, Ghost Notes is a modern fantasy adventure.
Ghost Notes is one of those books you can't quite describe, but instead have to tell people to read it from themselves.
It begins with introducing Amelie Trace, a humble young widow eager to take in the change of scenery and a new life as a teacher. You are soon fully immersed in her quest of a new life, but don't get too settled in, as things are about to take a drastic turn..
Elsewhere in time, a band of extremely unlikely heroes are bonded together in a quest to find a song of Legends and with it, to prevent the end of all they hold dear.
How are the two stories intertwined? Will the heroes succeed in their quest? Will Amelie find her peace in the village? Meriläinen takes your hopes and expectations and tosses them to the curb, when the story takes unimaginable twists and turns on it way to the final challenge.
I warmly recommend this book to read. It is unusual, imaginative, and boldly breaks some of the clichés us seasoned fantasy readers and used to and often expect.
This is a book with probably my favourite opening line ever.
Ghost Notes is certainly not what it seems at first glance. It's a tale of adventure that turns dark at times but is well balanced out by Meriläinen's signature witty dialogues end great pacing. When necessary the book doesn't hesitate to yank at the reader's heartstrings, too. I really felt the characters hardships and tragedies as well as their companionship and mirth.
It's the author's second book and you can see how far he's come since his previous publication: Spider Mafia. Ghost Notes is so much more. More mystery, more adventure, higher stakes, more music-- ...wait, music? Music plays a surprisingly important role in this story and, while it might not be everyone's cup of tea, for me it really worked. All in all, I really enjoyed it!
