Not quite what I expected. They use a little language that we try to avoid our son repeating (stupid, etc.) Also, parts of the story are handled in ways we would avoid, also. Cute idea, but not necessarily appropriate for our son.
This is a good read-aloud for preschool-aged children who will enjoy the razzing and rivalry between the bear and squirrel in this re-telling of how the chipmunk got its stripes, but younger listeners may be scared by the violence of the bear and confused by the squirrel turning into a chipmunk.
This book was about a bear who thinks highly of himself and a squirrel who teases him when he can't prevent the sun from rising. This is easy for children to understand because it occurs in real life. All the other animals gathering around adds to the anticipation. The pictures were well done and showed the emotions of the animals. Children can learn that bragging and teasing in a mean way are not good qualities to possess.
