James Allen was a British philosopher and a key figure in the self-help movement. His As a Man Thinketh is one of the best selling motivational books of all time. The James Allen Collection includes the four works for which Allen is most famous - As a Man Thinketh, Eight Pillars of Prosperity, The Way of Peace and The Heavenly Life.
Allen was 15 when his father, a businessman, was robbed and murdered. He left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. He later married Lily L. Allen and became an executive secretary for a large company. At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment. Allen — along with his wife and their daughter, Nohra — moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works. He also edited and published a magazine, "The Light of Reason".
Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement.
Allen's most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, was published in 1902. It is now considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person.
Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name, "The Epoch".
James Allen’s As A Man Thinketh described how what one thinks shapes what he or she is, becomes, and live. It is the indelible role of the mind in people’s lives. Good thoughts result into a healthy lifestyle, while bad ones - unhealthiness. That’s why it is necessary to cultivate a right way of thinking.
It's a collection so you will find more than one book inside. I do recomend all if you are into religious stuff. For me the most important a complete is the 8 Pilares, that has 5 Stars the rest goes to deep into a subject witch is no my beach per say.
Felt it was full of old age one liners that have been repackaged over and over again in this day and age. I see why he seems to be the first in the theories of self help.
As A Man Thinketh by James Allen is a thought-provoking masterpiece that reveals how our thoughts shape our character, circumstances, health, appearance, and achievements. It's a compendium of ancient wisdom that are indispensable and highly sought after in this dispensation. Recommendable!
At times I loved it, quite thought provoking. Then I would get caught in this never ending loop of ultra meta thought. It is very short so that it doesn't become parody of itself. It did help in understanding how are thoughts are who we are and that in itself is not some grand bit of knowledge that was unknown to the world; but it did help serve a reminder on the importance of staying near God are guarding what you consume in order to protect your thoughts so that they may not lead to sin. Absolutely worth the read.
