I have had the good fortune to receive as a goodbye and thank you gift a copy of Trevor Ferguson's "The Kinkajou", from the man himself, just prior to he and his lovely wife moving from our small town in Quebec for retirement off the BC coast this past October.

I have been reading Trevor Ferguson's Detective Emile Cinq-Mars City of Ice/Ice lake series under his nom de plume John Farrow over the past 2 decades, and have thoroughly enjoyed this series situated in and around Montreal, Quebec. I just read his last published John Farrow novel "Ball Park", the 7th in this series, published fall 2019 which I highly enjoyed and recommend.

While I had read and loved "The Timekeeper", published in 1995 and since made into a movie, and more recently, "The River Burns" published in 2014, both written under Trevor Ferguson's own name, I had not read his other early books until this winter, and what a treat!

I was recently blown away by the haunting "High Water Chants" which was published in 1977, another parting gift from Trevor, and have just now finished reading this other early novel by Trevor, a perplexing and confounding "The Kinkajou", which was first published in 1989.

Usually I can see where a story is going, but this book had me bewildered and confused and guessing right until the very end what on earth was going on! And, it was only at the end that everything fell deftly into place, with no loose ends, which was an amazing feat in itself, leaving only awe at the story woven together. Bravo, Trevor!! Please keep writing in your retirement!

Feb 2022: I re-read The Kinkajou, and enjoyed it even more this time!

I wanted something more out of this book. It was an intriguing read but in the end, it fell flat for me. I felt myself questioning the plot's destination about 3/4 of the way in, but pushed through to the finish. I won the obligatory participation badge when I was hoping for gold. I think the creepy/paranormal undertones of the beginning had me expecting more horror so yah, don't go into this book expecting that. It's actually a convoluted thriller.
