Writings that touch the pure-flaming heart of God-from the men and women who walked with Him through the ages-guiding into a deeper friendship with the "Father of Lights." Why at times do I feel so empty? If I am a Christian, a child of my heavenly Father, why does a barrier of life's pressures, cares, and troubles so often keep me from entering His presence? Is there a spiritual key that will unlock the doors of my soul to His majestic Spirit so that I am crowned with all the blessings that are mine in Christ? Julian of Norwich (1342-1413) lived when poverty, plagues, war and despotic kings ravaged Europe. A terrifying illness brought her to her deathbed. Then a powerful vision opened up to Julian. She saw the tender, burning, unstoppable love of God, reaching out to touch her. To love and heal the soul of the whole world. And in an instant, waves of health revived her physical body. Love made her well. Julian's ongoing vision of divine love, recorded over several decades, reigns supreme in all of English devotional writing. Her words will open your heart wide to be touched and crowned with new spiritual life, and with love greater than you have ever known.
With too much time on my hands this summer of 2020, I have been reading through the books of David Hazard in the Rekinding the Inner Fire series. The books which were written in the late 1990s are hard to find, so if you look hard enough they pop up from time to time.
I am not a Christian theologian, but I am their customer I am not a clergyman, but I go to church to learn from their sermons I am a retired businessman just trying to get closer to God's ways and I do read alot of all sorts of books, history, science, travel, Christian and crime novels, ok I'm a Michael Connelly fan (He created Cold Case Detective Bosch)
So back to David Hazard. Several times a year I read serious Christian books, not scholarly or academic, but books for laypeople to understand. This is the magic David brings to the table.
First, he is an excellent writer. So many Christian books are not written to be read by the average person, but are copies of sermons or position statements by churches.
David is a writers' writer and also functions as a editor. So decided to attack the ancient writings of Christians, starting with the year 100 and moving forward. And he is able to write their material in simple easy to understand 2-3 page daily devotionals for 40 days. He ends wait a short prayer that sums up the original authors intent
To give you an idea of his skill, my wife and I traveled through Norwich in England and took the tour which included a church built before the Crusades. The guide pointed out a small room behind the altar where Julian lived out her life praying during the 1300s. While she was living people from all over Western Europe traveled to Norwich to see her and visit for a short time. These people were some of the leaders of the Christian world at that time. David gives a better biography of Julian and I am embarassed that I had no idea who she was the day we stuck our heads into the door of the small room that she rarely left during her life 700 years ago.
Now years later reading David's devotional I am spiritually moved by the words of one of history's spiritual women.
I am reading other of his devotionals as I find them. They are books I want to keep and reread.
