The Story of a Wonder Man: Being the Autobiography of Ring Lardner

Rate this book
1927. Lardner, American humorist and short-story writer, is known for his mordant wit, exemplified in satirical stories and sketches of American life in the early 20th century told in the language of athletes, stockbrokers, secretaries, chorus girls, etc. Like all of the books of Ring Lardner, this one can be taken in a number of different ways. For instance, it can be read as an enchantingly rare piece of fantastic imagination; or as a biting burlesque upon autobiography by the usually successful man who takes himself seriously; or as a kind of revue of all the asininities of the day. It is all these things, that is the truth, intermixed with astonishing genius; and as exhibiting all of Ring Lardner's marvelous talents in one single volume, it is perhaps the most representative, the most truly Lardnerian that he has done.
