This is a fine book. It offers practical and clear advice to supervisors about their expectations and accountabilities. It provides a warning to any doctoral supervisor who thinks that the process is easy, quick and without challenges. The burdens of supervision - the deep responsibility to guide and enable the career of another person - are well presented.

I particularly recommend this book to new supervisors, or supervisors who believe it is a 'right' to supervise. The privilege of doctoral supervision - the trust it requires - is rarely conveyed in the higher education literature. This book is a reminder that doctoral candidates are the future of our universities, and this future is reliant on the professionalism, expertise, decency and intelligence of supervisors.
