Brand new pop star Cadence Hudson is on the hottest tour of the summer. When another singer writes a revenge song about her, she turns to her best friends, Maisey Lopez and Kenya Jackson. They're along for the ride, helping her stay grounded as her whole world changes. Aligned to Common Core standards and correlated to state standards. Spellbound is an imprint of Magic Wagon, a division of ABDO.
Lea Taddonio's Shake It Off, part of the Along for the Ride series is a pretty cute and engaging story. I can definitely see a lot of young girls really being pulled into the story and having a lot of fun with the bright illustrations. This book is also filled with text font changes that do an expert job of catching your eyes and creating a fun atmosphere.
All that said, I wouldn't recommend this book to a reader who struggles in any way with reading -- the text changes, while fun, are not conducive to aiding young readers who need support as the fonts can sometimes be difficult to read. The book falls under a 3.3 reading level, but the font is definitely important to consider.
Overall, the plot of the story is a simple one with a message. It was very summary-esque, also, and kind of skips over the origin stories for the three girls. While most young girls won't identify exactly with the struggle of the main character--a boy writing a "diss song" about a young singer because she said no to a date--they may still be able to identify with pieces and the overall message of preventing indirect fights. That said, it's a pretty quick read and though the message is a good one, the shortness and summarized portions definitely take a little away from the depth of the story.
Overall, a pretty good start to a series, but not without some small issues.
