Christian Pharisees: The Striking Similarities of America's Conservative Christians and Jesus' Earthly Enemies

Rate this book
The church in America today is not what it is supposed to be. There is widespread acknowledgement among Christians that something is not right with the church in America, though no agreement as to what the specific problem is. Christian Pharisees is an attempt to provide a specific diagnosis. At its core, author James Butcher's argument is clear and - During Jesus' ministry His main earthly enemy was the Pharisees; - The Bible tells us quite a bit about the characteristics and priorities of the Pharisees; - If modern American Christians share the same traits as the Pharisees, it is indisputable proof that Christians have gotten wildly off track from God’s will. Christian Pharisees makes the provocative case that modern American Christians look frighteningly like the Pharisees. Is the church in America full of Christian disciples or Christian Pharisees?

Very good and challenging book

A well written and thought provoking book. The writer shows very clearly how conservative Christians have many same traits that the Pharisees had. We need to take seriously the points James makes and heed to the warnings of Jesus.

Excellent book! It opened my eyes to the mistakes I am making as a Christian and the mistakes our church is making! Now the question becomes-- will I change?

Saying I liked the book is a bit of a misnomer. The book is challenging and causes you to think hard about the Christian you and other Christians practice. But I did like the book. I found myself agreeing with much, if not all, the author shared, and found myself asking how much of this applied to me.

I normally would have given this book 5 stars. I liked it that much. But I took one star off for a perceived tone the author used. There were several (maybe more than several) where I thought the author was being condescending and sometimes condemning if not outright angry. I understand his emotions, but Paul admonishes us to correct other Christians gently and in humility. The author does that, but not always.

I highly recommend this book, but only if what to be challenged in how you are practicing the Christian faith. It is well worth the time to read and study.
