I always enjoy reading Bryan's books on creativity! Bryan approaches the topic from a very personal and authentic point of view that's really refreshing and engaging, far from the dull and dry non-fiction I have attempted (and failed) to read before on the subject.
The first book in this series is definitely my favourite because of the engaging style Bryan writes in. I identify with so much of what he has experienced. Bryan shares his personal experiences throughout, so it really feels like you are sat with him having a chat.
Despite the informality of the personal approach, don't be fooled into thinking this title will not be useful. This is such a wonderfully researched series of books that at every page, I was impressed with Bryan's deep understanding, critical thinking, and analysis of creativity. It's a wonderful narrative blended with sound advice that will add to the reflective practice of any creative professional.
Even as a published author with many books and a defined process under my belt, I always find that reading Bryan's work provokes me to think about creativity and my processes in new and interesting ways. I always take away something of value to add to what I'm doing; this is a great series for the beginner and the professional that will challenge you to think from a fresh perspective.
I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book and have voluntarily chosen to leave an honest, unbiased review. Thank you, Bryan. I look forward to whatever you pen next!
Everyone is looking for creative ways to solve today's issues. You don't have to be a writer, artist, or musician to enjoy this book: Collins covers topics on how to organize your thinking and maximize your habits to become faster and more productive. But if you are a "traditional creative" type (or want to learn to be one), the best thing about this book series is it's *practical*. He pulls stories from history and psychology to illustrate his ideas, which are all written in bite-sized chunks. His writing is very clear and down to earth.
My favorite book in the series is the second one on how to master your "inner genius". Collins reassures the reader that no one is born a genius: it all depends on what is done with the thoughts you already have. He uses the analogy of putting on six thinking hats to help the reader shift perception and realize their own potential.
If you can't find at least one thing that helps you be more creative in this book series, then you must have your eyes closed. Bryan's books are packed with useful tips and suggestions!
Highly recommended for anyone who has thoughts and wants to do more with them!
Not a lot of useful/tangible take aways. For me, this was more of an "inspirational" writing book - a lot of anecdotes about successful people and a lot of reframing of "the prosperity principles" to apply to artists/creative types (get up early, eat healthy, don't do drugs, go to bed early/get a full night's sleep, etc.). This is the kind of book that's good to read when you're feeling down or stuck or stagnant and want inspiration/to restore your mojo/a "feel good" pick me about success and/or the struggles of other artists.
