“I Have Squirrels in my Belly” is a picture book intended to be used as an educational tool by teachers, parents and mental health workers to help children recognize feelings of chronic anxiety. By understanding that the uneasy feelings and misbehaviors of the main character are not always in his control, it is hoped that children will begin to develop understanding and empathy towards those that are suffering. The book also aims to demonstrate that a few simple strategies can sometimes make a difference, even if it’s just in the short-term.
I have Squirrels in my belly is an engaging explanation of the ups, downs, and turn arounds that are caused by anxiety. I loved the way that the story showed a very open and honest dialogue between the boy and his mother, and highlighted the ways that the adults around him could help to alleviate the symptoms of his anxiety that he was suffering through. Very well written.
A book that uses a great approach and touches on a sensitive and important topic. The main character shares his feelings about anxiety with various symptoms. Great plan made with concrete solutions. A great message and visuals!
A great resource for educators and parents! The mischievous squirrels provide some great humor, the pictures are delightful, and the topic is certainly one that deserves attention in today's society. A great start to what will be a very promising series!
