When Mouse, Frog, Duck, Snake, Dog, Chimp, Seal, Sheep and Bear are invited to a birthday party on the 10th floor, the elevator seems to be the best way up, up, up.
This humorous story told mostly in pictures will delight the youngest of readers and adults alike.
The publisher, Southwest Human Development, is one of the nation's largest nonprofits dedicated to early childhood development. They are a leader in early literacy, distributing over 140,000 children's picture books annually to kids who do not have access to books. All proceeds from the sale of the book support early literacy programs.
This book is a fabulous read aloud. It's the story of a group of animals taking an elevator ride upstairs to a party. Some of the inventive and funny ways the illustrator, Michael Hale, portrays this elevator journey so it's not repetitive are really superb illustrative thinking. And the last page, when the rollicking adventure is complete, is visually wonderfully heart-warming and precious.
This is such a cute story for young readers! Children love the animal characters, and it's easy and fun for them to repeat the animal sounds (ex. Woof, woof, woof) throughout the story. The illustrations are adorable!
I liked this book for it mirrors a few things about life, learning, and relationships that I'm trying to master. That is, sometimes in accepting that we must either go up, go down, or get stuck in one place it is that we best accept each day and event; like a story, with a beginning, middle, and an end.
But the basics? A community of wild and domesticated animals are invited to a party on the 10th Floor with only one way to arrive....by Escalator! Up Up Up! So what's next!?
