Awakening the Princess

Rate this book
The story of Ronin Kassius, a male 1st year high school student living on the colonized world of Teloria, who finds himself an unwilling participant in the Gun Princess Royale Tournament, where competitors known as Gun Princesses battle for the title of Gun Queen, and the right to compete for the vaunted rank of Gun Empress.

A High School Sci-Fi with a gender twist.

It is said there is no point crying over spilt milk, but for Ronin Kassius living on the terraformed world of Teloria, his decision to help out the Cosplay Club during his third year of middle school at Telos Academy in the city-state of Ar Telica is one he fervently regrets. Cross-playing as the popular animated heroine, Princess Silver Blue, garnered him a legion of ardent fans misled to believe he is a girl and not a boy because of his overtly feminine appearance.

A year later, Ronin begins his first year of high school at the Academy hoping for a change for the better, but his life is soon derailed in a series of mishaps that appear suspiciously intentional starting with an unpleasant after-school encounter with a girl commonly called a witch by her classmates, who threatens to expose Ronin's cross-playing days as Silver Blue to the student body. Escaping the girl, and his friends, by practically fleeing into a gaming arcade, Ronin's session playing an unpopular zombie apocalypse virtual reality game turns into a fight for survival ending with his apparent death. Waking up days later, and fearing the consequences of attending Telos Academy if his secret as a cross-player has been exposed, Ronin soon learns it's the least of his problems as his life begins to unravel in a waking nightmare.

Aided by three female classmates, and guided by an enigmatic voice in his head that he nicknames Ghost, Ronin faces twists and betrayal as he struggles to learn the truth behind the events at the gaming arcade, and soon discovers that his life and body have become the possession of a rich, powerful, and mysterious family that has chosen him to represent their interests by having him compete in the Gun Princess Royale, an all-too realistic and overly popular VR tournament where players with corporate sponsorship wield Gun Princess avatars in battle.

However, the greatest shock comes in learning that he won't be competing as a boy, but as a girl called Mirai, an existence that comes with her own unique set of problems, and if he wants his male body returned to him, Ronin will need to fight and attain the rank of Gun Queen, and face off against other competitors in the ultimate battle royale to earn the supreme title of Gun Empress.

Book One in the Gun Princess Royale series.

Gun Princess Royale is high school science fiction with a gender twist. It is the story of a feminine-looking young man by the name of Ronin Kassius who once cosplayed as Princess Silver Blue, an animated character, during middle school. It was supposed to be a one-time thing to help out some friends, but it is a legacy that both haunts and taunts him.

Where Albert Ruckholdt really kicks off the story in Awakening the Princess (Book One) is when Ronin 'dies' during a virtual reality tournament, only to wake up several days later to find himself undergoing some unexplained changes, and with a strange voice in his head. Now the property of mysterious, wealthy benefactors, he has no choice but to compete in the Gun Princess Royale virtual reality tournament . . . as a girl named Mirai.

As if playing a gender-swapped heroine were not bad enough, he has to deal with a best friend who is developing some confusing feelings for him, school bullies, and villains both inside and outside the tournament. As introductions go, this was a fun read, although the pace was a little slow for my tastes, and some of the dialogue felt a bit off. Aside from my impatience with Ronin's constant complaining about his role as Mirai, I thought the characters were well-developed, and the rivalries that arise felt genuine.

This is basically a forced feminization story but one that's not sexual in nature. It's actually the only one of that nature I have found.

The story takes place on another planet that has city-states. Ronin is 15 at attends school at the Telos Academy on a terraformed planet. One time he did some cosplay as a Gun Princess normally looking somewhat feminine in appearance.

The Gun Princess comes from a video game (a very advanced system compared to ours on this planet) and he enjoys playing the game. One day, though, things go way to far and suddenly he's involved in a life-or-death battle against real zombies at a real location. Or at least it seems real.

The rest of the story deals with Ronin's trying to figure out just what happened, having a seeming ghost talking to him, his body changed into a more feminine form, a best friend that may or may not be attracted to him, an ultra-nasty class representative, some other girls, nasty relatives of other people, being kidnapped, being shot at, being killed (sort of), finding out things are not at all as they seem and having to do all this while his body is still changing .

It's a quite wild story. One thing to be clear is that he never wanted to become a girl so he's not actually tg but by changing into a girl (against his will) he has to deal with being that way and how people react to the change. It's also, by the way, a very dark story.

Before I start singing praises I have to say there are no mistakes in this book that I can see so no worries there.
So first of all, the author doesn't try to please everybody by making the same generic stuff everybody likes they just try to make it as flawless as and as entertaining as possible whether that be in regards to the characters, the plot, the foreshadowing, the mystery, even with the grammar you can tell they put all their effort and creativity in this book so if you like these types of books, or are just looking for something new to read than I highly recommend this book.
You will not be disappointed with the quality of the book and I dare say the only reason you won't like this book is that you just don't like the type of genre/style this is which no one should blame you for, some people just don't like certain things that other people do.
So to basically sum up this review their is basically nothing stopping you from enjoying reading this other than you yourself having incompatibility with the book itself or put in other words "it's just not your cup of tea".

Good read.

A little slow on the plot, but altogether a good read. Looking forward to the next chapter. Thanks for the good time.
