Not So Innocent

Rate this book
Ella, Bess and Nessa grew up on a tough council estate in the north of England. All three have very different lives but all have endured the trials and tribulations of being cold, going hungry, borrowing from the ‘loan-man’ and begging neighbours for coins for the electricity meter or else huddle in the dark. They may have grown into fine women but where they come from will always be a part of who they are.

Good girls who have shared hard times can have a life-long bond that’s impossible to break. You hit one, you hit them all. When a violent attack brings them together in a way they could not have foreseen, how far would they go? Would they stand together? Would they kill for one another? Would they prove to be not so innocent?

I had high hopes for this, partly from a local interest perspective, but if I'm honest, it disappointed from the get-go.
Although I know it's probably semi autobiographical, it reads poorly, much like a GCSE creative writing piece.
Grammatically it wasn't perfect, and much of it didn't flow for me as a reader.
A bit self-indulgent.

This book was just awful, was it really necessary for the accident in the bed to be described? I must have read a different version to everyone else, I thought it was a terrible read.

I took a punt on this book because it was one of the Kindle deals of the day at 99p. And I am so glad I did - I devoured the book overnight and am very satisfied with the content, the characters and the ending. It's quite rare for me to be so satisfied with a book, but this one did it for me.

The book follows three girls - Ella, Nessa and Bess whom met in school. Each come from the same council estate, you know the type, everyone is into everyone else's business and it's very much a community - a line from the book is very apt, "if you hurt one of us, one of us will hurt you back". There's also an occasional chapter from a lad called Peter, but these are few and far between. The book follows the trials and tribulations of the three girls as they grow up on this rough council estate. They very much stick together and it's a proper friendship that most would be jealous of.

I enjoyed how the book was set out - each of the girls had their own point of view on each of the situations, and they had their own chapters. The chapters were quite short (I think the largest one was about 10 minutes by my Kindle), the rest ranged from 2-7 minutes, so easily read and very easy to get stuck into. It reads almost like an autobiography from each of the three girls, it's very enjoyable and true to life.

I'd recommend this book to people who enjoy reading about the 70s and 80s (which is when this book was set), anyone who likes a book with a lot of twists and turns, and anyone who likes books that are very true to life. Fabulous and I look forward to any more from the author. (The book contains sexual content).

Loved it.

I wasn't really sure what I was going in to when reading this after it was recommended by a friend. I started it Saturday and finished it 2 days later. I absolutely loved the book. It even had me crying and asking questions till the end. The fact that we have 3 main characters took some getting used to but I normally read books with 2 main characters so I think that was me not the book. I would highly recommend this book and will be having a look at the authors other books too.

An amazing friendship that stood the rest of time

3 girls, a passage through their lives together. Best reads in a long while. Each character was so strong that you were her as you read her part. Gripping and so vivid. Will look for books by Lynette Heywood again. Excellent read.

Truly loved it

Excellent book I really couldn't put it down, some of the descriptions took me back to where I spent my childhood . You could relate to many of the things going on in the girls lives. Looking forward to reading Web of Hope now

Excellent read, couldn't put it down, read it within two days. Lynette was a year below me at school so I can relate to the other people portrayed in this book and places mentioned. 🥰📖

Loved the book and all the different storylines. Would have been a 5 but some of the stories dragged out a little too much for me. Would like to see what happens next in their lives.
