"Le choix que j’ai fait de ces cris est bien sûr, comme tout choix, arbitraire. Sans doute ai-je commis de nombreux oublis, mais la mémoire est imparfaite, je m’en excuse auprès des vivantes comme des mortes.
On s’étonnera, peut-être, que j’ai mélangé cris réels et cris issus de l’imagination d’écrivains hommes. On aurait tort. Certains hommes nous connaissent mieux que nous-mêmes et ont parlé en notre nom (un peu trop, dira-t-on) à des moments où ligotées dans les contraintes sociales et religieuses, nous n’osions pas prendre la parole. Les temps ont bien changé..."

Born in Montmorillon, Vienne (but currently living in Paris), she is sometimes called the "High Priestess of French erotic literature." Deforges was the first woman to own and operate a publishing house in France. Over the years, she has been censored, prosecuted, and heavily fined for publishing "offensive" literature. She was formerly president of the Société des Gens de Lettres de France and a member of the Prix Femina jury.

Beautiful collection of poemes written by women over the years, from the middle ages to now. Love, feminism, heartbreak, such a personal collection of works. Thank you to my french teacher for gifting me this book it has a very special place in my heart.
