A fast paced new technology adventurous book that keeps the reader hooked on every page! Darin Gibby has definitely nailed it!

Addy is an engineer and a patent attorney, a person who can understand inventors from the inside. She feels for them, because she has the same dream as many of them, to invent the technology that will shake the energy technology ground for good. This is one aspect that makes her great at the job and also contributed in the board’s decision to make her partner at such an early time. Along with her new duties and responsibilities, comes a convention trip to Asia where she meets an inventor, Quinn, who wants her to represent his company in the US Patent Office. Addy is too overwhelmed to reject an opportunity to have her own law firm and work on a division she mostly adores. The moment she meets Quinn is when her new adventurous life begins!

The main character, Addy, is a strong woman that respects the environment and is such a dreamer that wants to promote the idea of hydrogen fuel cells. This is not a new concept in the scientific community. However, what makes it interesting is that there is a new idea in the store, other than cold fusion! And that is the nice plot to get the whole project started.

Not only the book will attract scientist and gasoline usage opposers, but it will give them an suspenseful story to attach! There is the dilemma of the young professional – Should I settle in my career accomplishment as the youngest partner in a law firm or should I leave it all behind and chase after my dream? It is a risk Addy needs to take even if she cannot know if it is for better or worse. It is a real life case and it is written really beautifully!

This is the first book I have read by author, Darin Gibby. I liked this book a lot. The innovation aspect of the project that WTG came up with was intriguing. A car that can run on water. It really is not that far-fetched as you might think. If no one has come up with the idea yet, I am sure someone will soon. What with people trying to think about being more eco-friendly.

To be honest, I have never really given it much thought into the process that companies have to go through to get new technology certified. For example, going through the Patent Office. Yes, I am familiar with patents but again. I never really thought about the process or even the fact that there is a profession as patent attorneys. This does make sense. Thus the reason that Addy is valuable. In addition, to the fact that she was so passionate about the project. Yet, for as smart as she was, I am a little shocked that she did not question Quinn more or even suspect that something seemed foul about the project. The way she interacted with her former boss, Perry, I felt she was harsh with him. He was her friend and he was looking out for her best interest. The tension was not super high in the story. However, it was more about the characters than the tension. An overall, well-written, smart read.

‘The Patent Office has already posted a notice on its web page officially halting the secret suppression program.’

Colorado author Darin Gibby is both a successful author (“The Vintage Club," "Gil" and "Why Has America Stopped Inventing?") and an internationally renowned patent attorney who has been featured in a wide variety of publications as well as TV and radio shows, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, the Leonard Lopate show, Yahoo! Finance and To The Best of Our Knowledge. His degrees include a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and a Master of Business Administration degree; he is highly regarded in Denver’s legal and business community as a patent strategist, business manager, and community leader.

Darin’s facility with his ongoing topic of patents is obvious with the degree of prestige he holds as a patent attorney. His ability to spin legal techno thrillers is certainly an associated skill polished in legal confrontations. But his uncanny gift for composing edge of the seat stories is special among today’s writers, a skill that is born of a rich imagination.

Witness the opening paragraphs of this book – ‘Addy felt like jumping out of her car and doing a quick happy dance in the middle of stalled traffic. Her excitement at becoming the newest—and youngest—partner at the intellectual property law firm of Wyckoff & Schechter was nearly overwhelming. She grinned at the shadow on the hood of Hindy, her treasured retrofitted cherry red Shelby Mustang. The shadow was created by a barrel-sized, hydrogen-filled balloon that floated above the Mustang’s roof. Gawkers pointed and laughed as the Shelby eased down El Camino pulling the tethered balloon as if in a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The balloon—which on one side sported her law firm’s logo, and on the other Hindy in giant cursive script—was just an advertising gimmick to show her passion for alternative energies. It was only strapped to the roof on calm, sunny days when she was travelling at slow speeds using routes that avoided overpasses. The retrofitted Mustang was really powered by four electric motors using electricity produced by solar panels and a conventional fuel cell. At first, the Wyckoff partners questioned Addy’s prudence in strapping a floating balloon to the roof of any vehicle, but they’d come to admire the effectiveness of her marketing innovations. They even lifted their champagne glasses at the end of her mentor’s welcome speech acknowledging that her Shelby was responsible for bringing in increasing numbers of the “green” companies sprouting like weeds all over the Silicon Valley—inventive, entrepreneurial companies in need of legal advice and support for their patents. While the traffic inched forward, Addy chuckled with excitement. “Hindy, ol’ pal,” she said, patting the dashboard, “you and I are going places now!‘

But places Addy and Hindy go are a bit treacherous as we discover in the fine synopsis: ‘Addy’s dream as a patent attorney is to help bring a ground breaking energy technology to the world. Addy’s hopes soar when she is wooed by Quinn, an entrepreneur, to join his company that has purportedly invented a car that can run on water using an innovative catalyst. After resigning her partnership to join Quinn, Addy discovers things aren’t as they seem. The patent office suppresses the company’s patent applications and her life is threatened by unknown assailants if she doesn’t resign. When she is arrested for stealing US technology from the patent office she realizes Quinn has used her. Now, Addy must find a way to clear her name while salvaging her dream of propelling this technology to the world, all while powerful forces attempt to stop her.

Keen colorful writing that develops through the book to make this dramatic very contemporary topic into a thriller. Darin Gibby is an author to watch as he obviously will climb the ladder of success in American fiction.

My first time read of this author's fast pace and exciting thriller. From the very beginning I was hooked. A young woman driving a Shelby Mustang - I didn't know what type of Mustang that is and couldn't go on reading until I researched it. By then I wanted more about where Addy, the protagonist, was off to in this cherry-red car and what she'd get herself into zooming around town. Well, first few pages the reader is right into Addy's troubles with Hindy (her Mustang's name).

I enjoyed the book because it's different from my usual reads with its new and ever-changing world's technology focus. Addy is a patten attorney and an engineer. She understands the world and what will be needed - soon - for us to survive. And I liked Addy. She's smart and with it. She's "girl power!' - independent young woman who's into helping the environment. Tough enough to survive the legal world. Addy's had her share of life challenges. Adopted from Vietnam to an American couple she didn't live the dream life one hopes for. The story gives her background a bit and shows Addy's positive attitude and challenges without being, "She's so strong and lonely, nobody gets her" kind of story. She's as modern as the story's technology and she's also idealistic. Where will this get her?

To strengthen her place in predominately male law firm and be the kind of partner she aspires to be she has to play the game. To prove herself she's sent off to Asia for a new technology convention. There she meets a rather mysterious man, Quinn, who almost stalks her at first to get her attention to his new invention. He wants her to represent him as his legal counselor. His invention will shake the world and in there lies the challenges. Addy and Quinn are followed, chased and threatened. The fear of losing the invention has them running for life and time to get a patten. Invention stealing is not new but this story is in the modern world of new inventions making it feel as though, this is for real. The race to patten Quinn's invention before it's stolen or destroyed sets Addy on a big adventure! As said, she's idealistic and cares about the environment and life on planet Earth.

It truly is a good thriller with believable characters and dialogue - three A+ for my reading interests. I recommend it.

MY THOUGHTS
The story was well written and fast paced. Addy has finally found her dream but soon it was shattered. She found herself being betrayed and now trying to hide by running. She wants her dream back. She is bound and determined to clear her name and get her life back. Addy is a strong, developed character. Someone is out to take her knowledge of some new technology she knows. Someone is out to hurt her. She's very intelligent and as a patent attorney she has dreams of making the future brighter not only for herself but for others. When she meets Quinn as a new entrepreneur, he takes an interest in her.. She quits her partnership to work with Quinn. But as we all know, when things look to good to be true, they usually are. Then things went from bad to worse. She is accused of stealing from the patent office.. She soon realizes that Quinn has been using her. Now, how strong can Addy be. She has to in order to clear her name and start over on her dreams. She is determined to bring new technology into the world but she also knows that there are those that are willing to do anything to stop her or even take away the knowledge for themselves. Addy doesn't give up. She doesn't know what it's like to do that. She had a dream, she still has it. She just has to begin working on that dream again. The author not only gives you a good mystery with action, suspense, a strong woman and the need for the reader to answer some questions. Grab a copy and help Addy regain her life and get that invention into the world for the betterment of all. What happened to Quinn? Did he have to pay in any way for what he did? What about Addy? Is there possibly a romance in her future? Hopefully there will be a sequel that will give us more of Addy's life. Oh, who or what is Hindy? You'll have to read to find out. You may be surprised!

I received a copy of this book from the author and Pump Up Your Book and voluntarily decided to review it.

Chasing Hindy - Written by Darin Gibby
How do you know when to stop trusting, after murder or corruption?

Addy’s dream as a patent attorney is to help bring a groundbreaking energy technology to the world. Addy’s hopes soar when she is wooed by Quinn, an entrepreneur, to join his company that has purportedly invented the car that can run on water using an innovative catalyst.

What did I like? The first thing that I liked is this whole book of over 350 pages and it did not have one sex scene! Legal Thriller that starts with an explosion and doesn’t stop till the final pages. Dreams, hopes, family, and values all play an important part in the story. Trust and love are hard to find in Addy’s book so when she does it leads to all kinds of trouble for her.

What will you like? Incredible action, mindboggling storyline, amazing characters, mind-blowing situations, lots of details and descriptions that keep you in the mix of the storyline without mudding the waters. The author's background shows that he knows his business and yet he doesn’t write it down to the layman. The explanations and descriptions keep are simple for those of us that are not legal eagles or engineers. I loved the action and the thought that if we could really cut out the oil companies and make our lives so much more simpler. Gee would that not be the greatest thing in the world. Oh well, back to our lives! I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.

Addeline ‘Addy’ Verges is an up and coming patent attorney who dreams of bringing a groundbreaking energy technology to the world. She has just become the youngest partner at her prestigious patent law firm, when the wheels start to come off her world. First, she and her hydrogen-powered Mustang, Hindy, are attacked as she’s towing a hydrogen balloon advertising her firm and highlighting her commitment to green technology, and then she’s sent by her firm to Vietnam where she meets Quinn Moon, a Korean scientist who claims to have invented a new technology that allows cars to be powered by water.

There are many who wish to see that Quinn’s technology is never realized and are prepared to do anything to achieve their desires, including killing Addy and Quinn if necessary. Chasing Hindy by Darin Gibby is an ambitious novel that explores the lengths to which governments and other organizations will go to protect their privileged positions, and the power of dedicated individuals to stand against them. A pulse-pounding story, it sucks the reader in from the first page, and never lets up until the stunning climax.

Well....female protagonist and she's a lawyer, plus some exciting chase scenes -- what's not to like, right? Wrong. Main character is Addy, whom I could not care about no matter how much I tried. She's something of a ninny.... pages and pages AND PAGES of self reflection on whether or not to join up with an inventer (or is he?) who is offering her a practice of her own but doesn't want to tell her everything. Just when I was ready to stop reading it (forever), there is a little action, but then I began to see this protagonist as narcissistic and making some decisions that later hurt lots of others. Plot is complicated, but fairly well explained at the end. Ending should have been thrilling and happy....but, not so much if you realize what she did to get the result she thought was so very important. I almost gave it a one star because I didn't like her and didn't like much of the story. Bumped it up to two stars because the plot was okay, I guess, and the author showed knowledge of patent law. The ending was kind of fun, but I really don't recommend.

I was not inspired by this book on any level, but other readers may love it. Addy, a patent lawyer, gives up a lucrative law practice in a prestigious firm to patent a water driven car. Quinn has invented a catalyst that separates oxygen and hydrogen so that water can be used as a safe fuel. The 'oil people', governments and other entities are not happy with this invention causing bad guys to chase good guys all over California roads of which I am not familiar. The premise is just too much pie in the sky for me.

The author's mechanics of good writing were excellent. The action would appeal to many readers.

Thank you, Mr. Gibby, for a good read.

Patent examiners getting into derring-do

Starts with a bang and doesn't really let up. There is a scientific flavor to it as well as an ecological angle if you feel guilty about just reading a book to enjoy it. The helter-skelter plot does keep things confusing enough that you won't figure out exsctly who is who but it will all make sense in thecend. A very pleasant read.

Incredible

Gibby writes a great fast flowing story, filled with suspense and mixed with a little intrigue. Who knew that being an attorney, and a patent attorney at that, was so ... exciting. I enjoyed this well written story. The characters are very well developed and continue to grow and not be so static. Good story about taking back ones life, and yet, there is so much more to the strength of the story.

***THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED FROM THE AUTHOR***

I’ve read a few legal thrillers over the years. From John Grisham’s The Runaway Jury to Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer , the excitement of the case is usually matched by the excitement surrounding the legal proceedings. Darin Gibby’s Chasing Hindy certainly fits the bill for a legal thriller, but perhaps with a little less polish than the big hitters in the genre. Even so, this book certainly kept me engaged and interested throughout, which is the mark of a good thriller, no matter what sub-genre it belongs to. Plus, even if the subject matter could have trended into “preachy” territory, Gibby manages to put the opinions about the environment in the subtext, and not in the reader’s face.

While I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this genre, I do have a few problems with it. First, the main character, Addy, is an interesting character, but I kept forgetting she was Vietnamese. Sure, she didn’t grow up there, but I kept picturing some blonde, white American instead of what the author intended. Furthermore, considering all the obvious red flags that led to the central conflict, I’m still surprised she made the decision she did (even if it was more than likely “romance-motivated”). Regarding plot, there were a few cringe-worthy clichés, and the redundancy of the news reports about the “lawyer on the lam” was a little unnecessary.

Despite all this, Gibby has crafted a narrative that successfully follows the notion that, in order for a good story, you must have a character with a clear goal and an unending amount of obstacles to prevent them from achieving that goal. In fact, I almost expected things to go wrong around every turn, which almost made the plot somewhat predictable. At least somewhat predictable plots are still entertaining since they deliver on the consequences of the foreshadowing and set-ups. On a side note, I also appreciated the shout out to my alma mater of the Colorado School of Mines.

An eco-centered legal thriller that focuses on action over “preaching,” I give Chasing Hindy 4.0 stars out of 5.
