ERRORS is a love story PG, that revolves around the back drop of high school baseball. The protagonist “Carrie” possibly the most beautiful girl in the entire school had always, purposefully, played her appearance down, creating an image of a mousy nerd. She did not care for the attention of the typical high school boys. She was forced, by her overbearing father, to take a job scorekeeping for the boys’ varsity baseball team. Much to her surprise, the boys’ baseball team changed the way she approached life. Errors were made both on the field of play and in her life, altering her existence forever. Carrie’s life chronicles the events of these times and how one veteran’s life effected an entire community.
Couldn't put this down! Relived the nostalgia of my youth in the 60s in small town America where baseball was, and still is, a huge part of life and character building of our youth. Devin's hardships growing up, and the eventual happy ending made this a great read in these days of gloomy news - a return to those days of innocence of my girlhood.
This was a good story, (I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could) written by a man I met through Facebook. One of the main characters is Tom, a high school baseball star, probably one of the best players in the state. He's growing up in the mid 60s in Northern California. His best friend is Willie, another player on the team. Carrie is the daughter of the city mayor. As with many teenagers, she doesn't get along with her father. We meet Carrie along with her father, in the school's guidance counselor's office to discuss her future. Her father has plans for her to attend Harvard and Carrie has no interest in doing so. Due to having a lack of extracurricular activities and public service, her father signs her up to be the baseball team's scorekeeper. Tom and Carrie fall in love of course and decide to take a break from schooling before attending college. This turns out to be a bad decision, because although he's registered for classes next spring, Tom has been drafted to fight in the Vietnam war, which changes everything.
While I really enjoyed the story, it was a bit hard to read. It was self published and contains a few misspellings and one very annoying punctuation error. I'd guess it had about 3 times more commas than needed. It caused me to reread many sentences because they just wouldn't make sense. Then there was a word used several times, 'jester', that didn't seem to fit and I couldn't understand what was meant by it. Much later I realized that it should have been 'gesture', aha! Had this book been professionally published, I'd rate it 4+ stars.
Here's the snippet that Mike had given me about the book: “ERRORS” is a novel that takes place in Northern California during the mid-sixties and continues through the early eighties. It was a time not far removed from the polite, modest and respectful influences of the World War II generation but yet, it was characterized as a time of sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll. During this time, many changes were taking place in this area of California. An evolution of music was happening. Many of the legendary bands grew in family garages from this region to the world stage. The beginning of the computer age and the advancement of electronics took place here. The aerospace industry was in full bloom and this part of California played a prominent role in its development. It was, also, a time of social change with the civil rights movement, the women’s rights movement and the widespread divisiveness over the Vietnam War.
