This little novella won First Place--YA Fiction from the National Federation of Press Women for 2018. It’s 30,000 BC. Hiding in a giant mimosa tree, Maru watches her father meet with the leader of a treacherous Andean tribe. Her father, furious that she’s followed him, tells her that if he is killed—something he fully expects—she must warn their people to flee. The people are prepared, Maru at age seven is not. Her father places heavy responsibility on her because she followed him. He hopes the responsibility will give her the courage to make it home. Courage is a story of a people who are utterly threatened but ultimately contribute from adversity some of the most amazing cave art in the Americas. Available in paperback, e-book, audible.
COURAGE by BONNYE MATHEWS Although short, this novella is touching as one small girl finds COURAGE in a big way when her father is called away. For a child to do as a parent says is difficult enough. To have to follow their instructions alone in an unfamiliar place is the embodiment of COURAGE. I found this book to be heartwarming, sad, and triumphant at the same time. I do recommend this book to all readers, especially non-standard due to the lessons it teaches. It helps many parents understand where their child is inside. THANK YOU BONNYE MATHEWS TESS COLE
Published January 24,2017 Paperback: $9.95 (122 pages) E-book: $5.05 www.amazon.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Synopsis: The story starts in the heart of a tribe 30,000 BC. The characters portray a deep family bond and a primal need to look after and protect each other. The novel has a fast progression which follows Efum and his daughter Maru on their quest to speak to the Molgray people. In their eyes they craved independence as a tribe and didn't want the Molgray tribe to rule them. Seven year old Maru is soon after traumatised by witnessing the brutal murder of her father and his head morbidly skewered onto a stick. From that point on Maru's world changes and her primal need to survive is driven by fear. The voice of her dead father gives her courage and tells her that trees can provide protection, she is not the same child she used to be. With Maru's warning about the Molgray people, her tribe decides to leave their home in search for a safer land. Proving to be a resourceful tribe, survival seems to run deeply in their veins. Voyages were necessary to create distance between their tribe and the Molgray. Death, murder and loss of children was seen and known by all; even the children. Maru as well as the other children in the tribe are not shielded from these things as it was seen by them as just a part of life. Art, music and storytelling seems to be a constant and normality for this tribe. Young children have responsibilities within the tribe weather foraging for food or logs as well as other things.
Critic: A heart warming story of courage, family, danger and survival. A compact book with a beautifully designed cover. Bonnye's descriptive and slightly abstract style of writing draws you into her unique world, when reading her novel; leaving you wanting to know more. Courage 30,000 BC is an impressive factual goldmine with an intriguing mixture of imagery and facts that have been interwoven into a creative storyline. Using the environment and factual elements of the time Bonnye combines it with a more modern dialogue to help the reader follow the story of an ancient time with ease. Although the tribe has a very logical aspect to survival which is driven with their inquisitive nature, they are very creative. Songs, art, dancing and spirituality also has a firm place in their hearts as a people. I highly feel that this book is as an interesting learning tool for adults and a must read. A very enjoyable and entertaining read. I recommend this book for academic and community libraries.
