Suddenly Mr. Darcy:

Rate this book
Miss Elizabeth Bennet was on holiday with her relatives in Derbyshire, near where her aunt had grown up. They had arrived in the little village of Lambton days before and this morning they had set off to tour the great estate called Pemberley. For many years Elizabeth's Aunt Madilyn had told Elizabeth and the other Bennets of the splendor of Pemberley. At their first glimpse of the great mansion, her Uncle Gardiner stopped the carriage and they stared at all that lay before them. Elizabeth saw this as a good sign, and though she had never seen anything to compare with seeing Pemberley for the first time, she anxiously awaited the tour. The last thing she thought of when she saw the place was that her life was about to change. In a matter of a few hours her life was altered and she was not the same young woman. Now she had to cope with first time romantic feelings, and they were directed at the man she had seen earlier, working in one of the many gardens. She thought of the books she had read on romance and she knew not how to cope in her own story, but events soon unfolded that tested her mettle and changed her heart forever, but would she find happiness?

I agree with the review written by Don Jacobsen. This author begins her book with a number of pages which set a bad tone. She does warn the readers that she does not write in Regency style and that is fine. But then she complains about bad reviews; even claiming some are other authors putting her work down to make their work look better. I am not an author but I have reviewed something like 650 books. I will comment about errata when it is bad enough to be distracting. And in this book I wondered if the author had a spell check program on her computer. She does state that she did all her own editing. Sadly, her book showed the need for someone else to read it and give her some suggestions. At times the language was not smooth. She uses the same phrase in some paragraphs twice which sounds awkward.

Now for the story: The premise or outline for this story is a good one. The author has taken away the four people who cause the most disruption in ODC's lives in canon: Wickham, Caroline, Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins. There is little angst. The book description tells us that Elizabeth and the Gardiners meet Mr. Darcy when they take a tour of Pemberley. Darcy has been discussing with Mrs. Reynolds his need for a wife and made up a list of characteristics that lady should have. Early in this story both Mrs. Reynolds and Darcy decide Elizabeth Bennet has met all the qualifications. Now the story keeps us in suspense with various events; the most notable being a violent rainstorm and several being affected by the storm's rampage. And while this shows all the brave and selfless facets of Mr. Darcy he is tongue tied and humble when he thinks about winning Elizabeth's heart.

The storm not only keeps Elizabeth and the Gardiners at Pemberley for a number of days but it also allows the members of that group to get to know each other very well. A return to London adds to more time together and the additional introduction of Bingley and Jane...need I say more?

This story was interesting and a smooth ride. I do like a bit of angst and read this to the end more because that is my own quirk. I like to finish what I begin. If you like a clean and sweet story this may score better with you.

Oh, to have given more stars!

Reviews are editorials. Reviews are designed to offer future readers counsel. Reviews are meant to give authors guidance. There...I have said it. Ms Louise opened her work "playing the refs." I would recommend that she lose the defensive introduction in future editions of this nicely plotted story. Note that I said "future editions.". "Suddenly Mr. Darcy" begins from a pretty premise and developes in a canonical fashion. The story offers interesting and pleasing mileposts even if the angst is limited. The reason I write "future editions" is that I hope the author has the pride to go back through her work and remove the grammar, syntax and vocabulary errors is that they do detract from the reader's pleasure. They are jarring, and tend to inspire the reader to pay attention to the verbiage rather than the plot. There a many spots where the writer repeats herself within a paragraph or two. I readily accept the whole "not writing like Jane Austen" approach. No complaint from this quarter. That is the writer's choice and must be respected. Just as it is a reviewer's choice to argue that non-period language detracted from that reviewer's experience. Overall, "Suddenly Mr Darcy" as it is is a great beta-read. I do hope that Ms Louise reaches out to the JAFF writing community for support in her development of the final version of this and her future works. 3 stars +/-10%.

As advertised, this Pride & Prejudice variation has no angst. Elizabeth is on holiday with her Aunt &uncle at 18 years old and takes a tour of Pemberly. The couple hits it off right away and bad weather forces the visitors to stay awhile. Both Elizabeth and Darcy believe it's not possible for them to fall in love so quickly so the story is drawn out so that Bingley and Jane get to meet each other. Everyone lives happily ever after with no angst, as mentioned as the first sentence in multiple chapters

This book is too sweet but the ending is awful and there are too many grammatical errors to not make a comment. But it's a pleasant read with little angst.

Lovely

A sweet and lovely variation inspired by Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Anne Louise. I enjoyed it.

I must say that my experience with this author started out poorly when she complained about people leaving poor reviews, and the fact that she had to do her own proofreading, because she couldn't afford an editor. Perhaps if she had a friend review it? Find someone in the English department at a community college and come up with some type of barter system? If you want to be an author, you must be professional about it. I thought the author's comments were very bitter and unprofessional.
As for content, as stated by multiple other reviewers, there was no angst. This created the problem for me of the book being boring. There was nothing going on. It felt like reading a laundry list of conversations: "Elizabeth said this," "then Darcy said that". Syntax could have been greatly improved, a lot the writing was clunky. Add to that spelling errors, punctuation errors, and parts of speech errors, and this was a definite negative for me. I read to the end, and I'm disgusted that this is time I'm never getting back.

clunky, needs a lot of editing and revision

Really, 1 1/2 stars. And that is for the concept of the story. I think the idea has a lot of merit and could potentially be a really good story.

I want to say… "The biggest issue with this book is…" but there isn't just one. There are many. As many people have already mentioned there are a lot of grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors. There are also a lot of historical problems, as outlined by another reviewer. The contacts are far too modern. Elizabeth is an 18-year-old in 1809, life was much different for young women then. Many of the scenarios that Elizabeth and other characters were in would never happen back then.

I suppose though, one of the things that bothered me the most about this story, was how clunky it was. The conversations between the characters just did not flow very well. There was a lot of stilted, awkward conversation, a lot of backtracking between what characters were saying to each other, poor word choices... and the conversations were not natural... there was no flow to the conversations… Not a single one. I found the conversations did not move the story forward, but were jarring and interrupted the story a lot. It was like every character was thinking about what they would say next, instead of listening to the conversation they were in.

In addition, on more than one occasion, the thoughts of different characters.... it was like they had ESP or something… they knew what another character was thinking or feeling or wanting… Without even have talked to the other character and sometimes without having ever MET the other character.

like I said… It's a cute premise, and I think it has merit. But the story itself is clunky and it doesn't flow well, and it seriously needs some editing, revision and reworking. The areas that could have provided some really good drama were cut short, and too much attention was put on conversations that did nothing to move the story forward.

cute read..

so refreshing to read a story of our favorites, Elizabeth and Darcy where there are no villains jumping from the proverbial bushes and wreaking havoc on a pair that had to fight on there own to arrive at their HEA..

A sweet story

A sweet, romance and worth the read. Good pace and is a feel good story. I enjoyed that Mary was more than an afterthought. So often she is just a wallflower.

Love at First Sight!

This is a good, clean Pride and Prejudice variation. No major faux pas made by our favorite couple so much less angst. Instead some added drama in the form of action! A few minor editorial mistakes but by no means indecipherable. If you'd like to see them fall for each other quickly, read this!

Sweet and loving

Completely different setting and meeting of Darcy and Elizabeth. I found that this to be realistic in many ways. I also enjoyed how they fell in love and meet the families. Truly enjoyed reading this variation. Recommended to all to read. Clean, sweet, and cute
