The Crooked Christmas Tree: The Beautiful Meaning of Jesus' Birth

Rate this book
In this real-life Christmas fable, when a Dad decides to let his kids select the family Christmas tree, he gets an unexpected lesson about God's love.

In this thoroughly contemporary holiday story, a father lets his children choose the family Christmas tree. To his surprise, the kids pick one that is crooked. As he tries one thing after another to make the tree look right, he rediscovers the power of God's love. He begins to understand Christmas in a new way, particularly when his family decorates their tree and crown it with a star, never even noticing the crookedness he spent hours in the garage struggling to hide. The tender and laugh-out-loud narrative of real-life relationships propels the reader through the most un-generic Christmas story. This upbeat and comedic treasure refreshes the Christmas message of love and faith.

Damian Chandler uses this parable of a crooked Christmas tree to bring the Gospel to life. This was a good choice to read as a devotional for advent.

Christmas is undoubtedly my favorite holiday that I began anticipating when I was a child and now as an adult, for different reasons. It has a different purpose for me now than as a child and as a believer in Christ, perhaps even more so. Besides the time to indulge in family honored timeless traditions, and celebrations, it gives more pause to me as I realize how quickly time passes away and often times there is a sense of loneliness and peace that can also follow.

As we raise our children, we teach them what our parents taught us or perhaps refrained from sharing based on unmet expectations so we can do them differently with a different outcome. For me, I loved Christmas because it meant bringing joy to a single mom who worked hard to provide not only for us in the way of basic needs but also to try her best to provide what filled our Christmas lists. It meant I could take on the burden to make her life a little bit brighter by cleaning and decorating the house, as a surprise from where she left it to change from one job to the next and head out the door. It was to say, Thank you! I appreciate all you do and I hope this at least brings a smile to your face. This is also what I have taken away from Damian Chandler's book, The Crooked Christmas Tree.

It conveys the story of one families goal to bring home a Christmas Tree and the real meaning behind the perfect "One" and the one their kids would subsequently choose. I felt myself cringe in my own perfectionism to understand this man's plight. To bring home something less than worthy to be set up on display in my house, despite the reason why the kids found true beauty in it. It conveys a parallel perspective that came one Christmas morning to give us the ultimate gift. One we tend to take for granted more days than not. Have you taken a peek at our earth lately? It's a mess. Yet despite that, God's name is still on the title.

David is not simply declaring God's royal reign over this earth. David is declaring that the earth and everything in it is still God's responsibility. Good and bad belong to Him. Its victories and even its failures. And He has no plans on distancing His name from it. Even as we destroy His masterpiece, God still commands that we celebrates His ownership and creative patent every week. Long forgotten, buried under more 'important' topics, is God's call for us to celebrate that He is still the titleholder. He still celebrates that we belong to Him. He celebrates me and reminds me, "My name is still on your title. You are my responsibility. My crooked tree."

I received The Crooked Christmas Tree by Damian Chandler compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups. There is something powerful in this amazing little book. It is a reminder to us all about the world we live in, the people in it and how we need to be reminded of what God's purpose is in all of it, more than just once a year, but 365 days of the year. It is a reminder about holding on to the things that matter and letting go of the ones that don't. To spend the time with our family and friends who will pass away before we know it. To be in the moment instead of worrying about tomorrows. This will be a book I read at the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year in hopes of changing my perspectives to love the crooked trees more than the perfect ones! I easily give this a 5 out of 5 stars.

While this is a real life story made into a "Christmas parable," it's not a story for kids. He tells other stories besides the Christmas tree one, and these involve things like a strip club shaped like breasts and two women who work there. The main story was about the family buying a crooked tree, his efforts to make it stand straight, decorating it, etc. He gives the tree a personality rather than having it as a normal tree. He'd pause after a section of the story to draw parallels about us as crooked "trees" and Jesus loving us. He also brought in other stories from his life to illustrate his points. It's a fast read and the humor makes it an enjoyable read. Though it's not quite what I expected, I'd recommend this book to adults or teens.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine.

The Crooked Christmas Tree by Damian Chandler offers a new way to look at God's love through God, his family and the lens of a crooked Christmas tree.

This true story starts out with a family picking out a Christmas tree. Dad wants a perfectly straight tree that he can show off to everyone who comes to the house. However, the kids have a different idea and they end up with a crooked tree. Chandler then uses the story about the Christmas tree to share how God loves us like those kids love their tree.

The Crooked Christmas Tree isn't a very big book and it looks like a quick read. For me, it wasn't a quick read though. I found Chandler's overall story to be thought provoking and it kept me reflecting on God and Christmas. At the same time, I found some of the author's slang and a few key phrases to be foreign to me as they aren't used where I live in the Midwest. That may or may not be a problem for other readers depending on where they are from. I also thought this would be a good book to read as a family but I thought parts of the story were too deep for younger children and one part of the story definitely related more to adults, so I don't think it would be. Instead, I honestly think The Crooked Christmas Tree is a better book for personal devotions and taking some personal time to reflect on the Christmas season and contemplate the story's spiritual meaning.

I received The Crooked Christmas Tree from Faithwords/Hachette Book Group. I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for the book.

I sat down in the recliner last night after supper with this little book in my hand with the goal of finishing it and I did!

Chandler weaves the story of redemption into the dilemma of his family choosing the ugliest tree on the tree lot. He pays for the crooked tree and mutters under his breath that this crooked tree would ruin their Christmas season.

The ugly, crooked tree did just the opposite - it gave him a whole new and fresh look at the meaning of Christ's birth and Advent.

The night his family celebrated and partied around Mr. Crooked Tree, Chandler realizes the profound truth that heaven becomes a big party when even the worst of the worse becomes a child of God. Joy unspeakable.

If you are looking for a book to help bring back the spirit of Christmas look no further than The Crooked Christmas Tree.

very well done!

Nice book for seasoned Christians and possibly to help introduce newcomers to God's love and grace for each of us. Each mini-chapter is really really short; you could make this into an Advent season devotional book, follow the author's chronicle of purchasing, definitely not liking, gaining insight into, and then loving the Crooked Christmas Tree his kids chose. Pastor Damian Chandler parallels the less than perfect condition and appearance of the evergreen (not quite ever-eternally verdant, because in the end its needles turn brown) and his attempts to make it acceptable, then finally beautiful, with God's redemption of human sinfulness and our less than attractive traits and habits. I realize this is a very "slim volume," and nothing is comprehensive, but I'd have appreciated more emphasis on God's gracious redemptive activity in Jesus Christ restoring humanity's original Imago Dei (the image of the divine in which God created us) rather than what comes across as original sinfulness and depravity.

Pastor Chandler's interaction with the sex worker (strip teaser?) when he recognizes her vulnerability and essential beauty and then invites her to the revival he'll be preaching is a strong and stunning model for us to follow as it demonstrates one way he followed Jesus' example. And I love how he describes chopping the truly finished-for-Christmas tree into three pieces, taking it to the curb for recycling, and tells us how the tree will get shredded and return to the earth it grew from as mulch to become a life-giving matrix for other trees and vegetation that in turn will help restore life to humanity and the rest of God's natural creation. Jesus of Nazareth on the tree of the cross of Calvary?!

Bringing his three kids and his spouse into the story about the crooked Christmas tree is an excellent device, but I got confused. In the book his kids apparently are very young; they weren't a whole lot older and bigger in Chandler family pictures I found online. Yet the author refers to decorating the tree with years of stored school craft projects! I doubt the kids had gotten much beyond preschool at their ages in the book, not much further in their online photos, so maybe that could be revised? All in all, very well done!

The Crooked Christmas Tree is a nice, short little book, perfect for reading as a family around the holidays when you would like something to spark discussion. The narrative is amusing and easily followed, with thoughtful musings as to what can be taken from the simple state of the crooked tree. Chandler turns the tree into a metaphor for our own broken state before God, and its transference from the tree lot to their living room as undeserved redemption.

The story may or may not be something that most families will want to read with their younger kids. While the majority of the chapters deal with the author's personal thought process regarding the tree his children picked out, there is a chapter where the tree reminded him about an encounter with a woman outside a strip club. Yet this portion of the book can easily be skipped over for younger listeners if so desired.

Reading it on my own, I found the author's voice to be amusing; full of tongue in cheek observations and woe-is-me descriptions. There were at times some turns of phrase that I did not really understand or some points of humor where did not follow, however most of these involved scenarios that I have no past experience with. My family has always put up a fake tree without any real determination to develop traditions, so I am not well acquainted with that struggle.

I have provided an honest review for this book after having received a copy of the book from the publisher.

The Crooked Christmas Tree is the true life story told from a father’s perspective. The story starts with the way many households start the holiday season, the picking of the family Christmas tree. Mr. Chandler tells the story of how his children picked a crooked Christmas tree. However, as Mr. Chandler and the reader will discover this is no ordinary crooked tree.
Mr. Chandler is set on a road of introspective discovery, set by a tree he didn’t want to begin with. He writes about the lessons he learned through this tree; lessons of rejection, the Lord’s saving Grace, and how God loved us so much He sent His only son to earth to save us. At Christmas, while the perfect Christmas tree is sought to adorn our homes, God sent His perfect son to save our crooked selves.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Chandler highlights the true meaning of Christmas and how Jesus’ birth is the light that obliterates all our crooked pieces.

I recommend you read this book. It is heartwarming and these lessons will live in your heart beyond this holiday season.

Happy Reading!

I am always happy to review a Christmas book, so this one was an easy decision to review. This one is actually a true story, unlike most of the Christmas books I review. It is also an extremely personal story. Though the book is not long - I read it on my lunch break at work - the author packed a lot into the story.

The book is the story of the author and his family's trip to buy a live Christmas tree. His kids go for a crooked one against his wishes, and he writes an amusing tale of his reactions to buying and having to display and decorate such a tree.

He learned some lessons from a crooked Christmas tree, and using Scripture he relates those throughout the book in between discussing his feelings about the tree.

I enjoyed reading this little book, and the lessons the author learned from God as a result.

We read this little Christmas book for Book Club. It is short and a very easy read. The author allows his children to choose the family Christmas tree. The catch is, it doesn't meet the perfect tree standards. The author uses the crooked Christmas tree to relate how God sees us and how we can learn to look to the heart of a person. There were a few times the author made some impactful statements, at least for me. The lessons seem obvious, but it's always good to have a reminder.

My one disappointment is I was expecting more of the birth of Jesus which the title implies. I thought the book spoke more about an older Jesus and our relationship with God. Again, not a bad thing, but I was looking for more about how the story related to Jesus' birth.

It is a sweet little book, not overwhelming.

I thought the description of this book sounded good and was so glad I read it.

My thoughts:
This book has such a wonderful message. It was a great reminder of God's love for each one of us. The author does a good job in expressing his feelings with the tree chosen by his kids and how his feelings about the tree changed. I think after reading this book you will look at people who are different from yourself in a new light.

I had my husband and son read it too.

It is a quick read, and I believe you will enjoy it this holiday season!

I received a copy of this book for my review from the Hachette Book Group. Thank you.

I absolutely loved Damian Chandler’s style of writing in The Crooked Christmas Tree! What a clever presentation via witty storytelling of the Gospel of Jesus and God’s saving grace as he compares his family’s crooked tree to our own imperfections. At first he despises the crooked tree, but with each new challenge the tree creates for him, God reminds him just how much we humans need fixing up, too. Chandler describes each reminder by sharing a memory or Bible story to present an analogy to the tree. Slowly but surely, he grows to see the tree’s value and beauty as God sees us, crookedness and all.

Really interesting and thought-provoking allegory.

The author uses a crooked Christmas tree to illustrate the human condition and God's work in our lives.

The book is a really quick read, as it is pretty short and divided in tiny chapters, but reading it slowly can give the reader time to fully process the meaning. Also, to get a more complete experience, I recommend reading up to "On the Curb" before Christmas and saving the last two chapters for after Christmas. I actually read it that way without even realizing it and I thought it was perfect! :)

Damian Chandler combines his personal experiences with the story of Jesus to explain the significance of a crooked Christmas tree. We all are imperfect. But Jesus came to wipe away our sin and make us perfect in the sight of God. We often judge by what we see, yet our "crookedness" doesn't trouble our Maker. We are his children and we cannot be too crooked for him to love us. This heartwarming story will bring new meaning to the spirit of Christmas.

Author Damian Chandler caught my attention immediately. What a humorous way to show that we are all crooked in some way, but so loved by God that He doesn't shun us because of it. Open, honest, and beautifully told, this is a great read any time of the year.

This was a really good and quick read. The author uses a crooked tree to demonstrate the way we see ourselves vs. the way God see’s us. When his children love the crooked tree, not seeing its faults, just the beauty, it reminds the author of how God looks beyond our imperfections and loves us anyways.

It doesn’t sound like the comparisons would fit well but they really do. I found it much easier to think about how hard we are on ourselves when I could think about the crooked tree. The way we hide in shame, just as this tree seemed to hide behind others, the way we seem to slump in defeat like the tree hung its branches, and the way that his kid’s loved the tree from the beginning, the same way God loves all of us.

This book would be wonderful for anyone who suffers from shame or is really self-conscious, which is probably the vast majority of us. The modern world seems to idolize perfection and it’s easy to feel that if we don’t match the models on TV, we aren’t worthy. This is so far from the truth and we need to make sure everyone knows that. Through this book, I was reminded that no matter what others think about me, God loves me for who I am, imperfections and all. I can stand proud in my crookedness and so can everyone else.

this was a short book I'd only 130 pages. the book is about the meaning of jesus's birth through the story of getting a crooked Christmas tree. now we need to overlook and see the beauty in things that may not seem perfect on the outside. it was a good and easy read and a unique way to interpret the story not my usual book topic.
