Errant Blood

‘Everyone has skeletons. Sometimes it’s better to keep the cupboard locked.’

Errant Blood is a literary crime thriller by a startling new Scottish writer. The story follows Eamon Ansgar, war veteran and reluctant young laird of Duncul Castle, as he uncovers a plot involving people-trafficking, big pharma, the green energy boom, crypto-archaeology and the Latvian mafia during a rain-soaked winter in the Scottish Highlands. This is a book that explores some of our most troubling contemporary issues with a relentless pace, intricate plot, memorable characters and an epic finale. It is the first in series set in and around the Highland village of Duncul.

I loved this book and bought it after attending a live author event in Stirling where I met the writer Calum Petersen.
Based in the Highlands of Scotland, this book weaves a subtle spell over the reader with several plot strands which ultimately come together as the story roars to a thrilling if not unpredictable climax.
I enjoyed the Scottish background and touches of African mysticism and overall the story was bang up to date and very topical. Perhaps not the most jaw-dropping ending but the wonderful scene-setting and characterisation more than compensated.
If you enjoy a good action adventure story you won't be disappointed by Errant Blood. I look forward to a second novel by this new author.

I found this book to be a really good page turner especially in the last 100 pages when I couldn't put it down. However, I did find the introduction of all the characters in the beginning to be a little confusing as the chapters jumped from the point of view of one character to another. I have to say that it became clearer as the story unfolded and the tale began to pull together, but the full tale of the stolen yacht was never fully revealed. I liked the way a few people managed to pull down a rogue business and the descriptions of both scenery and action were very good.
I did find one typo on Pg 42 as i think the word 'man' was missing from the phrase 'a young with a fresh face'.

This book set the mind thinking on all sorts of subjects to do with isolation and the treatment of migrants, also stretching out a huge stage set and visionary images of the Highlands, a really satisfying read...Would encourage anyone to take it up.

You can feel Eamon’s world tipping as the secrets of Duncul unravel in a violent surge of fearlessness.

This is a book about the strength of love, of irreversible loss, of greed, clandestine evasion and unbroken pursuit.

An absorbing read.

Full of mystery and intrigue.

At first it seems a bit complicated, as if the writer had too many stories for one book but once you get stuck into it, you can't put it down.

Great story with good twists and turns.

Thoroughly enjoyable and well written, with that dark Scottishness that you find in Buchan, Robertson, etc.. I hope someone picks this guy up and he gets the success and recognition he deserves. He has something special.

A great thorougly detailed read and throughout a thrilling ride. It is written with care and dignifies a nation of eccentrics who show they have uniqueness and value beyond the hustle-bustle of Europe.

This is a literary crime thriller set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands. The plot develops at a steady pace with no compromise to the prose which is always lucid, honest and when necessary, poetic. The Protagonist, a reluctant young Highland Laird, leads the reader through the mysterious and at times terrifying story of murder, missing people, drug dealers, ancient rituals and cold ambition. The book is also about love and how far some would go to save it. A brilliant novel.

Disclaimer: While I aim to be unbiased, I received a copy of this for free to review.

This review is a tricky one to write because I found myself drifting in and out of the story while I was reading it. I don’t think this is a fault of the author’s, though – I’m just a little exhausted at the moment and so I haven’t really been able to focus on anything.

Don’t worry, though, because the bits that I focused on were enjoyable, especially because it touches on different genres. In some places, it’s almost magical realism, except with a science fiction twist. And mostly, it’s just a good old crime/detective novel.

It’s also just aesthetically pleasing, thanks to a mixture of the cracking design and layout and the illustrations that are scattered throughout it. It’s also published by a small press, and it’s rare that you see releases of this quality from a press of any size. Kudos to Scotland Street Press for doing such a great job with it. I actually can’t think of any reason to fault it, but I can’t give it a five just because I did drift away from it. If you pay attention, it’s hard not to like it. Try it!
