James N. Frey is an American novelist and acclaimed writing teacher, best known for his influential guide How to Write a Damn Good Novel. He has authored both fiction and non-fiction, including thrillers and several popular books on writing craft. Frey taught at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1994. He continues to lecture on creative writing at various conferences and institutions. His fiction has earned critical recognition, including an Edgar Award nomination. Frey lives in Berkeley, California.
A rather run of the mill tale of a Custom Agent who skirts the fine edge of the law but has a great record of closing cases. After his last case which was botched by the interference if an agent from internal investigation which got another friend and agent severely wounded Tom Croft is relegated to a desk job in the basement with a civilian with the nickname of “Awesome Dawson”. Dawson convinces Tom to help her break into a internet remailer to track down pedophiles and when they run into problems, Tom crosses the line by getting a Hacker he had caught and was in prison , out to help. They make progress but find themselves in a chat room with a serial killer. The killer, a computer expert as well discovers their interest and begins to work against them. Lots of computer skullduggery and several murders as Tom and Dawson try to track down the killer.
I just could not get into this. I didn't find it funny and I thought the art was terrible. I'm stopping after about 30% because I don't want to waste more time on this. Too bad, it had a lot of potential to be good.
