Conversations on The Light Between Oceans: A Novel by M.L. Stedman | Conversation Starters

A Brief Look Inside:

The Light Between Oceans is M.L. Stedman's first and only novel to date.
It tells the story of
Tom and Isabel Sherbourne who find an abandoned child and take the child into their home
and raise it as their own.
Soon, the biological mother is found. Eventually, the story becomes a question of right and wrong
because Tom and Isabel
must decide whether or not to tell the truth about the child. That question becomes more and more difficult
to answer as time goes on...

The Light Between Oceans was named
as a Goodreads Book of the Year in 2014.

...and was called “extraordinary” by The Guardian.

A beautiful, heart wrenching book. First book in an extremely long time that has made me cry at the end. Couldn’t recommend it enough.

This is a story that held my attention all the way through. The questionable decisions people make can lead to unexpected and difficult results. Gripping story!

I can't say I enjoyed this book, but not because it wasn't well written. In fact, the story is so well told that it made me sincerely sad. That's not something that happens to me a lot when I read.

I certainly identified more with Tom's way of thinking than Isabelle's, but I could empathize with Isabelle, especially as I am a mother myself and have experienced the loss of a baby during pregnancy. Again: excellent storytelling, very genuine and authentic. I appreciated that a lot.

I also appreciated the fact that this book gives us a look into the mind of a good man who loves his wife, works hard, and genuinely wants to do good in the world. I think we need more of these.

I'd give 3.5. it was such an emotional story, and it was very unique. I really liked it, but i wasn't racing to read it. It also had a storyline where everyone lost which is hard for my heart. Not that it really matters, but the audiobook narrator was difficult to hear and i really had to focus in on his voice even with high volume.

I wasn't initially attracted to the premise of this story but the character developments completely drew me in. I also loved the reality of the ending. Nothing Hollywood or too good to be true. I can now understand the hype this author has garnered. Well deserved.

Beautifully written novel about good people and the sometimes tragic choices they make. It's a story of love, loss, mercy and courage.

It was a good book, but too heart wrenching for too long for me.

A reminder that times were different and difficult in the early 1900. Enjoyable reading.
