An epic journey across borders, The Vale of Tears chronicles close to two years in the life of Rabbi Pinchas Hirschprung as he seeks an escape route from Nazi-occupied Europe. In this rare, near day-byday account, Rabbi Hirschprung illuminates what life was like for an Orthodox rabbi fleeing persecution, finding inspiration and hope in Jewish scripture and psalms as he navigates the darkness of wartime to a safe harbour in Kobe, Japan.
The Vale of Tears is, to me, more than just a stranger's account of horrifying events and immense suffering-- the Rabbi's village is the same one my family came from. Our entire extended family died during the events described in this book. We're extremely grateful for this account, and for the translation. I'm not sure we would've ever known to look otherwise.
Aside from any bias, this is still a fantastic read. Rabbi Hirschprung's story is incredible. As hard as it was to read, it's too gripping to put down. These are trials none of us will ever come close to facing, and it truly captures the essence of human resiliency.
