The Yes Effect: Accepting God's Invitation to Transform the World Around You

Rate this book
From the missions strategist behind "The 10/40 Window" In 1990, Luis Bush helped change modern missions by introducing the concept of the 10/40 window, a geographic region where large, dense populations of people suffered severe poverty and limited access to the gospel—essentially shining a light on the world’s greatest need.  Now, after decades spent serving in global missions mobilization, Luis has a unique perspective on what God is doing around the world. Though statistics and maps can be a great place to start, The Yes Effect reveals that true transformation begins when we restart our hearts —getting in sync with God’s tenderness toward the oppressed and regaining compassion for the lost. In The Yes Effect , Dr. Bush shares his own story as well as inspiring stories of individuals and organizations around the world whose acts of love and justice are bringing hope and transformation in places of misery and immobility. From the orphans weeping in Bihar, India, to garbage collectors in Cairo, Egypt—from the single mom trying to find a way to feed her family as a Syrian refugee, to the church cowering under government control—God is at work in surprising places. And this transformation is sparked when ordinary people say yes to God, igniting an ongoing global chain reaction that sees glimpses God’s kingdom springing up all over the world. Ultimately, The Yes Effect will give you an encouraging window into worldwide efforts to spread the gospel, and it will inspire you to give God your “yes”—and like so many others before you, become part of God’s global story of transformation.

I’m quite a bit on the fence when it comes to missionary work. Yes, missionaries do good stuff for people living in poverty and such in far-flung places of the world, but I’ve always wished that they were a little less evangelical. I mean, can’t Christians be a little more like Alcoholics Anonymous — getting people to their cause through attraction rather than promotion? It seems to me to be very insensitive to go to, say, a Muslin or Hindu area of the world and expect to convert them all to Christianity. Will that need ever be sated? If all of us were Christian on Earth, would we have to go to the Moon and make new converts there?

That’s a way of saying that Luis Bush is a missionary, and his zeal shows forth in his book The Yes Effect. Bush coined the phrase “the 10/40 Window” to describe the latitudes and longitudes between Western Africa and South Asia where Christianity is hardly abundant, and this is coupled with severe poverty in that area of the world, so the two go hand in hand. Bush wants this portion of the world to convert to Christianity, which he feels may clean up their problems in one fell swoop. That’s not to say that his intentions are poor. As The Yes Effect makes a very good case for, poverty in one area of the world can cause problems in more affluent areas of the world. I felt my eyes were opened a bit at this.

The Yes Effect by Luis Bush open the eyes of the believers to the small things that we can do for God's Kingdom that could result in transforming the whole nation. This book inspires me to make my own little step too for the Great Commission that was entrusted to us believers. I became aware of the movements that's happening around the world just because someone like me, a simple believer, stepped out of their comfort zone, listened, and became sensitive to the assignment God gave them. Most of the movements mentioned were grassroots meaning they started from the bottom to up. It is really inspiring.

My favorite books--the ones that affect me and change me and pull me closer to the heart of God--are books like The Yes Effect by Luis Bush with Darcy Wiley. The stories and ideas are both powerful and practical. They inspire God possibilities for everyday people like me. I've been taking notes and praying over the questions at the end of each chapter. The stories and writing are definitely the sort of inspiration that spurs action.

An account of the author's experiences in the mission field in the 10/40 region of the world. His trust in God in good times and in very dangerous times is an excellent testament of faith. Whether you are in another country or in America, in the mission field or not, there are valuable lessons to be learned from reading about the life and works of the author, Luis Bush. I received this book from Goodreads for free.

Everyone has a part to play in fulfilling the great commission. This book is full of inspiring stories from people in all walks of life who have said, "Yes" to that calling and moved forward to love, serve, meet a need, and share. This is a must read for every believer. Reading with an open heart God will move through you to help you say, "Yes" too!

This book was like a shot of Vitamin B to my prayer life. Wiley and Bush share stores from around the world of everyday men and women who say Yes to the Holy Spirit's prompting and see the world change because of their obedience. Super encouraging.

This book is a beautiful picture of what God can do through unlikely people in unlikely places. The authors are knowledgeable and artistically demonstrate what God can do in a needy world through small, faithful acts of obedience.
