An ideal farm is depicted in the pages of Buttercup Farm. Although the text makes clear that the dairy cows are removed from their calves, the environment depicted here is probably the best situation animals on a working farm can hope for. The cows graze a lush meadow, the chickens range freely and lay their eggs in nests, the pigs rear their young in deep straw bedding. So here we have a depiction of what farm animals can be when they have an environment that meets their social, mental, and physical needs. The trouble is, that even though these type of farms have nearly been run out of existence by the corporate factory farm model, many people still believe their food comes from the types of places depicted in children’s books such as this one.
As is so often the case, the production of eggs, dairy, and wool is mentioned, but the use of animals for meat is not.
