The Dragon Soul

Rate this book
An enchanted relic thought lost for centuries is discovered. Only a dragon-riding priestess and a skinwalker can stop it from falling into the wrong hands.

With wards of protection, Fryda flees Indham in search of Alfric. The only problem is that he is a skinwalker capable of tearing her limb from limb. And outside the safety of Indham's walls, she's just one woman against a tide of skinwalkers.

Following a dangerous path, Fryda travel west, to a treasure-filled dragon hold, the forest stronghold of the realm's most powerful sorcerer, and a mountain city where a deadly witch queen awaits.

Through it all, the mysterious relic known as the dragon soul draws Fryda and Alfric closer together. But finding each other could mean an ancient conquerer's return to power. And that would signal the enslavement not only of their world, but all those beyond it.

I rate this book 5 stars because even if your not happy with the turns of events, this story is going to draw you in and keep a grip on you till you get to the end! but even then it's not going to let you go, it's going to leave you anxious to find out what's going to happen next and cursing at Samuel Green because you will have to wait to find out! I found myself so caught up in this story that I was catching myself yelling at the characters and had to stop reading on several occasions so I could get myself back to reality before continuing and then get back to the saga as the characters move from one harrowing predicament to the next in this danger filled and tension causing episode of the Vagrant Souls series. I recommend this book along with it's predecessor "the Shattered Orb" to anyone looking for a fast paced nerve gripping danger filled series fraught with dragons, gods, magic, monsters, and mortals trying to fight and stay alive as events beyond their control threaten to overtake them and the world at a furious pace that you get to see and experience through the perceptions of several of the different main players of this story. so stop reading reviews and read this book (after you go back and get the Shattered Orb first if you haven't already!) and then hold on for the ride! in my opinion this was a great book in a great series, so go get a copy and get reading! you won't regret it!

Fryda goes in search of Alfric and barely escaped with her life. Fryda believes she can find Alfric over someone else. Alfric meanwhile is trying not to become a monster chasing the star. Alfric isn't like the other's much to their complete dismay. The leader of the others enjoys being the monster and looks forward to becoming more monster-like. Hiroc is struggling to make peace with himself and his powers. Will Fryda succeed? Can Alfric stop being a monster? Will Hiroc accept himself? Your answers await you in The Dragon Soul.

This is a great follow up from ‘The Shattered Orb’, the first book in the Vagrant Souls series!

Once again Green plunges the reader straight into an incredibly fast-paced, utterly absorbing storyline. Leaving Indham behind, we follow a pack of ravenous skinwalkers as they leave a trail of destruction and pestilence in their pursuit of a mysterious beacon. We watch intently as Alfric battles for his very soul, and we cheer for Fryda as she encounters dragons, elves, and a pretty damn evil tyrant.

I said it for the last book, and I’ll say it again. Green’s work is so compelling because you never know if the character is safe, if the dead guys are really dead, or if the good guys will be truly good. For every decision that each character makes, whether it be handing over a certain artefact, sparing another’s life, or helping to usher in a new world order, the reader is left frantically trying to calculate the implications, and balance up the fate of those left behind!

I really enjoyed reading this second instalment of the series as it allowed me to connect with the characters even more (My favourite is Jaruman- long live the Madukai!). It is pretty hard not to like Fryda and Alfric, but even so, at multiple points throughout the novel they really tested me! Elmyra is absolutely fantastic as the antagonist (best one I have come across in a while), and the jury is still out on Hurn.

Even the skinwalkers, as a pack, are such a dynamic group. I wasn’t expecting at all to connect with a number of bloodthirsty and merciless beasts, but Green somehow managed it. I loved how they all had their own agency and sense of purpose. Bradir in particular seemed like quite a complicated character, and I’ll be interested to follow him further.

For some reason, I really love some of the settings that Green uses, particularly for his larger battle scenes. The spire in the last book was fantastic, but this time Green introduces us to the city of Dragir. It is a fantastically robust place, with its own social order, thriving underbelly, and distinct identity. It was the perfect place to unfold the storyline, and really served well to bring the plot to its culmination.

Overall, Green did a great job of making his world completely engrossing all over again. I can’t wait for the next instalment (The Infernal City), and will be reading pretty much everything else that Green has to offer in the meantime. I suggest you all do the same!

P.S- This one has a great ending too!

This world is divided, much like our own, by those that follow various religious beliefs, based on Gods who have been imprisoned into orbs and whilst so, the areas thrive and are protected but when these orbs are destroyed, so are tje peace within the regions. Men are overcome by wraiths, spirits that change the human body into that of a beast. Basically, the story is to try and prevent the take over by these beasts. Then new players enter the picture l, each with their own own madman's idea of Ethiopia.
Although a bit blood thirsty l, the struggle of those trying to fight for what they believe is right, draws you in and you want to know how it all ends.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the third book to find the true outcome.

This wasn't a bad read. There is something missing that the book requires to make it great, but I just can't put my figure on it. I found it a good read but slow in places when it gets long winded. A good read, your choice if you read it or not.
