A book of "recent" periodicals dated from 1991. One generation later, it was an interesting read to see where we as a society are. The first article was annoying, it was written in 1989, and attempted to label Generation X before we were called that. Oh, and also, the author wished for us to have a war in order to "define" us: thanks so much for wishing the Gulf war to be.
Dissaffected youth are nothing new and I don't think that will ever change, however it appears the shift has gone from fear of losing stoner kids to suicide to kids being bullied in 2010.
Other topics covered were the AIDS crisis, racial relations, gender equality. I know there were more, but I skipped over the topics/stories that no longer interested me.
Depressing read to be honest, not exactly something to curl up with at night but somehow I trudged through it. It was compiled to be a serious student text, meant to encourage dialogue, but not a singular cheerful "the kids are all right" article.
The best of the read was a fictional story written my Joyce Carol Oates on a woman shopping with her daughter. Beautiful and painful.
