About the author
Magnolia Belle
43 books36 followersMagnolia Belle grew up in a military family and has lived in several U.S. states as well as the Orient. She graduated in 1978 from Tarleton State University, where, as editor of the University paper, she won first place in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Editorial competition in 1977. She was also a member of "Who's Who Among Colleges and Universities" in 1977-78. She currently lives in Texas with her husband and their (spoiled) dogs.
A singer/songwriter and guitarist, she played with a band in the 1980s that made 3 albums. Belle proudly declares some Native American heritage. The above two facts are part of the basis of the Black Wolf series. Considering herself a native Texan, her T'on Ma and Black Wolf series are both set in that great state.

Parts of it don't follow the movie (Hello page 24!) and other than that it is just an okay easy reader with ponies but I don't always expect magical things from easy readers so I guess it's all good.

Not surprisingly, this book was terrible. L (age 5) picked this and a whole bunch of other paperback My Little Pony easy readers out at the library and boy are they ever tedious for me as a reader. First of all, it's rarely enjoyable to read aloud easy readers but L can't actually read yet so I have to read them to her. Second of all, it seems that they apparently tried to cram an entire movie plot into this easy reader book, which just didn't happen successfully at all. This book just barely made sense, and there were some parts that didn't make any sense at all (like the whole mer-pony thing; there seemed to be no point to the whole mer-pony diversion at all and also why on earth is a pony that lives under the water named SkyStar?). Maybe if we'd watched the move I could make heads or (pony)tails out of this book, but as it is I was at a loss.
The funny thing is, L doesn't even watch My Little Pony on a regular basis, but she likes these books so I grin and bear it. I guess it's her version of the easy reader superhero books her brother was obsessed with a couple of years ago.

This is a good introduction to the new characters in the upcoming movie. It also seems to give away much of what is likely to happen. One of the names wasn't entirely clear how to pronounce, so we'll see how close I got when the movie comes out. The sea ponies are, of course, a big hit. I remember them being popular in the original series when I was a child, though they weren't nearly as frilly. My daughter was thrilled to see the new art, so of course she's already elicited a promise from Nana to see the new movie when it comes out and carries this book around with her.

The kids loved this, but trying to pack a feature film into a beginning reader book is quite a challenge.

I love MLP but this is all over the place. Is this what the new movie is about? Okay then. It was interesting nonetheless.

No real cohesiveness to the story. Hard to comprehend. Cute illustrations though.

Short and cute. As good as a reader can be I suppose.
