Introduction to the Theory of Lie Groups

Rate this book
This textbook covers the general theory of Lie groups. By first considering the case of linear groups (following von Neumann's method) before proceeding to the general case, the reader is naturally introduced to Lie theory.
Written by a master of the subject and influential member of the Bourbaki group, the French edition of this textbook has been used by several generations of students. This translation preserves the distinctive style and lively exposition of the original. Requiring only basics of topology and algebra, this book offers an engaging introduction to Lie groups for graduate students and a valuable resource for researchers.

Wonderful and engaging book from one of the finest expositors and researchers in this area.

Graduate students of mathematics will find gems within the pages. The third chapter, a personal favourite, essentially follows von Neumann's path, which should perhaps be more popular than it is these days due to its clarity and efficient proofs, through the exponential map.

Godement's four volumes on Analysis are often criticized for omitting exercises; while that is quite true, I found that in this particular volume the author has left quite a few calculations to the readers, and these will serve as interesting exercises for students.
