Do you like Children's Theater? Do you like resolutions so neat and tidy that there is no way anyone can leave unhappy? Do you like making fun of Italians, Turks and Gypsies?
If you do, then this play is for you!
Based on a Moliere play (and with the same structure as many a Shakespearean comedy), Scapino is built around breaking the fourth wall and incidental transitions to keep everyone entertained while scene changes occur. The person who lent it to me kept going on about "Comedia dell'Arte" but this piece is based in something older, sillier and meant for young audiences, even when some of the thematic material is a bit over their heads. Reading this script is like reading a screenplay of a Bugs Bunny cartoon (which goes to show how rooted in the traditional comedy plays Looney Tunes used to be) ... but that's a bit disorienting. It would make for a fun night out, but not much else. I can't imagine this type of play making a lasting impact. (not that all plays need to).
It was cute and funny and a very short read. Not the absolute funniest farce I've ever read, but it still had that over-the-top absurd feel to it! I liked the ending a lot--even though it was a bit predictable, it was still adorable and heart warming.
