A useful primer on postgraduate research, geared towards students preparing for their PhD, although many of the sections are applicable to Masters courses and other postgraduate research. This short volume is laid out in clear sections with a wealth of practical tips and advice and plentiful further reading sections. Alongside the details of writing out research proposals and the nitty-gritty of writing a thesis or dissertation, this also usefully explores other related areas of postgraduate work: conferences, book chapters, journal articles, teaching, and the like. Inevitably it's heavily dated in places given that a quarter-century has passed since it was published (there are still references to floppy disks etc.), but a lot of things haven't changed in the interim period.
