Sometimes one church is better than two. The missionary landscape of the North American culture necessitates churches, young and old alike, rethink how they can, and should, align to strategically engage in God’s mission in their cities. Using the real life example of two churches in Greenville, South Carolina, Mergers provides a description of the rationale, biblical basis, and process by which two churches can unite to more effectively declare and demonstrate the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Matt Rogers lives in Greenville, SC and serves as the pastor of The Church at Cherrydale (www.tccherrydale.com). Matt is a graduate of Furman University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and received his PhD from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Matt writes for a number of evangelical organizations and speaks around the nation about the need for disciple-making and leadership development in the local church. This all pales in comparison to the joy Matt finds in being the husband of Sarah and the father of Corrie, Avery, and Hudson, and Willa. Find Matt online mattrogers.bio.
This book is a nice overview of the merger process. I would consider it a flyover, exposing the many complexities that any churches will face as they go through a merger. It introduces many key topics and has a nice index of references. It is more of a brief overview than a detailed guide. But if one reads this book first, they will be better prepared to read more in-depth books that are available on the subject.
