A feel good book on how neighbors help neighbors (or examples of instant karma). Heart-warming in that it has children repaying the kindness of an adult neighbor. Brightly illustrated with a recipe for Cholent included.

This is a cute, sweet story about Monty shoveling snow for all of his neighbors and then hurting his back, so they all send him some cholent (stew) and he shares and has a feast with the children who bring it to him.

Herman, Michael The Cholent Brigade, PICTURE BOOK Kar Ben (Lerner), 2017. $18.

Monty Nudelman shovels his entire neighborhood after a big snow storm. He shovels so much that he hurts his back. That is when his church community springs to action, each person in the neighborhood sends a child with a different container of traditional Jewish stew called, Cholent. Eventually there is enough for a feast and the children enjoy it with Monty –later that week they shovel his walk after a storm.

With universal themes of community, community service, and kindness, this is a wonderful book. There is a big component that references the Jewish religion, but it would be a great talking point. Often I think the books from this publisher are meant just for the Jewish community as an audience but in this case, its balanced between a great message and an easy to understand cultural aspect. The illustrations are simple and bright, easy to share with a group.

This review is meant for parents, teachers, and other people that work with children to read.

Mr. Nudelman woke up early to shovel snow for his neighbors after a big snowfall. His neighbors are able to get to work and school because of his hard work and could also shop for Shabbat. The mail carrier now would not slip and fall while delivering mail. While he is trying to clear the snow away from his own yard he has an accident. This prompts the people he helped to come and help make his recovery a lot more comfortable.

I think this book will encourage children to learn to help each other for the sake of wanting to help them and not expecting anything in return. I think it will also show children that if they help others it will prompt others to want to help them sometimes when they need it also. It is also a good reminder about how so important it is to help you neighbor, whether it is someone that lives close to you or someone who lives inside or outside of your neighborhood.

I received this book free for the purpose of reviewing it.
