I could not put down this book, and it was a real page turner!
To convey my thoughts on this book I would like to breakdown each significant character, I came across who gave life to this incredible book.
First is Ama Ranbandara's mother whose occupation was a sex worker. With her character, author opened the reader's eyes to the fate of many struggling women in our country who neither had proper education nor a means to find a good job , and ends up settling down with this kind of job for their sole living. Author does not forget to highlight the risks that these women face , when engaged in such jobs, such as sexually transmitted diseases , to which she becomes a victim in the end.
The title of the book is illustrated through the protagonist Ama Ranbandara's character and her job as a makeup artist at a well known TV channel. The young women she beautifies ,with her artistic touch are lovers of the chairman of the company she works in. Adorning the multiple mistresses of a person of power signifies the title of the book and author cleverly use this to show the state of affairs at many workplaces in our country.
Ama has a rough childhood, and goes through a roller coaster ride of emotions as a child and as a woman. Her raw emotions, feelings of lonesome are infused in the words of the book using many references such stars in the sky , sound of a flute , her nightmares, and her constant need to look at the blue sky.
What I liked most of the book was how author brings to light many issues that young women of this country face , such as depression at the face of abuse, sadness, emptiness and loss, that women endures silently, but Ama fortunately has a friend in Sasha who she falls back on when she was at one of her darkest periods of her time. Another admiring point of the author is she cast a light on one of the despised and minorized group of people such as Sasha who are gay, and difficulties they face due to their sexuality in a country like ours, from being cornered at workplace to being bullied by the society, the problems they too live through is numerous.
වණ්ණ දාසි also reveals to us the reality of political system of this country, using characters like Jayadewa Maliyadda, who was a journalist , Ama's father, and Malan - a rising politician who fights against the corrupted politics of the country. Along with Ama's rise to the top of the fashion industry, author attempts to show how politicians and their offspring in Sri Lanka abuse their power to dominate the successful entrepreneurs and their business they built from scratch so they can multiply their already won power, to satisfy their greed and craving. Ama also face the backlash from such politicians when she refuse to oblige to their requests, yet she never succumbs to it. She keeps working towards her dreams no matter how many times she falls down, despite the adversity she faces from all kinds of forces. While Ama changes the face of fashion with her radical ideas, Malan (a politician of mixed heritage), in his own right, believes in fighting corruption and changing this country into a free and open country where anyone of any caste, class or religion can embrace who they and be treated equally.
I just started reading the book yesterday but already made it long enough to make a review. Simply it's good book that you cant stop reading and it feels, each and everyone emotion. Nicely written. I recommend this book to every woman out there worrying about how they were born and thinking about the things they have lost. YOU CAN ALWAYS BEGIN ALL OVER AGAIN AND MAKE ANYTHING WORK OUT.
