Hibiscus Homicide is the fourth installment in Aysia Amery's Maui Mayhem Cozy Mysteries. Caterer and amateur sleuth Ginger Lee is contacted by one of her clients, Elisse Wilder, to arrange for catering of a funeral. It appears that her brother Kyle has murdered his second wife and then turned the gun on himself. Ginger contacts her detective friend Pako Anzo to determine that he is indeed the investigating officer for this case. Pako is one of the few people who knows of Ginger's special abilities in communicating with the dead and reading past lives, and he is happy to use her talents to help solve the case. Ginger also enlists her staff members Reese and Jemma to help amass clues. The biggest clues, however, are the hibiscus charm found near the crime scene and the hibiscus found on Nani's urn.
While this book has interesting aspects, I found the writing a bit stilted and the ending a bit predictable. I was disappointed that a story set in Hawaii had so little scenic description. I believe that this author has very good ideas and can develop her style. I look forward to her growth.
As the other two books I've read and reviewed in this series, I enjoyed Hibiscus Homicide despite the short comings of the novella length. We get a tiny bit of character development in each book, the settings and situations are all a bit different keeping them fresh enough.
The ghost aspect really needs to be goosed up, it doesn't add anything because the ghosts never seem to be able to help so why have them as an element?
I received my copy from netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Love the setting, food, ghosts and sleuthing. Local colour, great coworkers and an understanding detective make this a great cosy series. Recipes please!
