Mr. Darcy's Change of Heart: A Pride and Prejudice Regency Variation
I think Darcy's heart was always engaged, but his mind fought those feelings since he was raised to be snobbish as if it was his birthright. Riding out that morning, he felt he needed a long, hard ride to rid his thoughts of one insignificant country miss. However the day takes on a near fateful ending for the Master of Pemberley. His horse stumbles and falls on his leg catching one foot in the stirrup. In his pain, he realizes that he needs a wife and heir for Pemberley. He calls out for Elizabeth like he was expecting her to materialize in front of him. Pulling himself forward, painfully and slowly, Darcy makes it to the stile, but cannot get over it. Inching towards a tree to rest, he begins thinking about Georgiana, Pemberley, and the wife of his desire, Elizabeth. Elizabeth who thinks and feels things of unknown identity, scrambles to an area that she has never walked before. Seeing Darcy resting on the tree, she thinks he is dead. When he wakes his vision is blurred and he thinks she's a mirage. Blinking, he sees it is Elizabeth and she offers help. At first he wants her to go get help, but Elizabeth won't leave him. Being resourceful, Elizabeth cuts the ropes of the gate between the fields and fashions a litter to pull Darcy down the hill. Just picture petite Mis Elizabeth pulling a litter heavy with Mr Darcy's robust, dead weight figure. Tired, but determined, Elizabeth is nearing Longbourn when she sees a rescue group coming. The men carry the litter, and Elizabeth with her entire body screaming in weariness, arrives and orders a bath hoping to relieve the muscle pain. The escape of the Netherfield residents aborted since Darcy needs at least six weeks to recover. Those six weeks were not only productive for Jane and Bingley, but for Darcy and Elizabeth. With Darcy's changed character, and a proposal so much better than Hunsford proposal, the two couples have their HEA amidst the sniffling of Caroline Bingley. Spelling errors, or typos incorrectly corrected by spellchecker, didn't hamper flow or understanding, but still overall detractors.
A lovely tale from Harriet Knowles, she is a creative storyteller, plus, she doesn't drag out the plot. She tells the story; first, by getting to the point, quickly, and then, secondly, proceeding to wrap it up nicely. Eventually, I think she will give us a longer story, but so far I have enjoyed everything I have read by her. Good Read.
