"John Henry's philosophy is of the most approved up-to-date brand. He is by all odds a young man of the period; he is a man about town. He is a slang artist; a painter of recherche phrases; a maker of tart Americanisms." So says the publisher.
George V. Hobart, under the pseudonym Hugh McHugh, wrote a number of books revolving around the wit and observational humor of his fictional character John Henry. Beat It! is the eleventh of the series. It was published in 1907, and as a result the humor is quite dated. With that said, it is still amusing in a quaint way, and benefits from it's brevity, taking perhaps an hour to read.
