When I Grow Up, I Want to Be Myself

Rate this book
My story titled "When I Grow Up, I Want to Be Myself" was inspired by myself and many other little girls who struggle to stay unique in a world where most people look and think alike. Naya, the main character is an eight year old girl who feels ashamed that she is not prepared for her class' career day. She has a realization that although she does not know what she wants to be when she grows up, she knows the type of person she wants to be. This book celebrates diversity, uniqueness, fearlessness, and individualism.

This a great book and one all kids should read! The underlying message is very important.
It is vital for kids to be themselves and not be pressured into acting or dressing a certain way.
This book conveys the message brilliantly and is accompanied by bright and vibrant illustrations which really stand out.
Highly recommended reading for all children!

Pros:
Bright colors
easy to read
Teaches acceptance of yourself

Cons:
Assumes that the other kids dress the same and therefore they are the same. Its great that the main character is an individual, but not at the expense of the other children. It seems to indicate that the main character feels she is the only quirky one and, ultimately, that makes her superior. After all, the other kids are nothing more than a "room full of colorless shirts".

The point of a career day at that age is not to shove children into a mold and force them to commit to a profession. Its to make them think about the possibilities. Naya seems to be very closed minded about this assignment. She summarily rejects the other children's ideas as not appropriate for herself, but makes no effort to explore other career possibilities. She is then rewarded for not doing the assignment; she is rewarded for choosing not to learn.

It is always great to see a story come along that promotes a healthy image for children. It great when a child knows what they want to be when they grow up. But what happens when they don't?

There is a difference between knowing WHAT you want to be and WHO you want to be when you grow up. That message is loud and clear in this story. The young character knows exactly who she wants to be, and realizes, she has time to figure out the what. Children need this message now more than ever.

This is a delightful story about a young girl who isn't afraid to be herself and it's okay to be different. The message in this story is incredibly important for all children to learn. The story paired with beautiful illustrations make this a book both children and adults alike will adore. I would highly recommend this book to any parent!

Naya is an elementary school student who enjoys being different. She dresses in colorful clothes because she likes being different. When she arrives at school it is career day. Various classmates present what they want to be when they grow up. Naya doesn't know what she wants to be. That night she dreams about what she wants to be. She "was able to see...I am kind, I am giving, I am unique and crazy!" The next day she got up to tell what she wanted to be--"MYSELF today and forever!"

Good advice for any child. Don't try to be what anyone else wants you to be. Be yourself.

I love this book and the kids loved it too at my daycare. They loved the colors on the front and I think that is what got them so excited about me reading it. I love what the book is saying and I look for great books like this to read with meaning. Beautiful book.

Love this book!! I was lucky to receive When I Grow Up, I Want to Be Myself it as a goodreads giveaway winner and was very excited. I love the artwork, the writing, and the little girl's spirit! As an adult, I wish there had been books like this when I was young. I had to share this with my 25 year-old daughter because I saw her in the little girl, and I hope to be able to share it with future grandchildren while they grow up to be themselves!!
