Matthew Carroll was one of the first on the scene of the disastrous defeat of General George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Carroll was the wagon master supplying the forces of Colonel John Gibbon on the Yellowstone in the summer of 1876 and here is the diary he kept of that eventful summer and fall.
