Two Go to Easter Island

Rate this book
Two brothers, brought up on the ancient alien theories of the 1970's, come upon a windfall that allows them to plan a trip half-way around the world to visit Easter Island.

Can they solve the puzzles that have left countless archeologists and anthropologists confused and befuddled? How did this isolated group with no metal tools, no pottery and without the wheel, carve large statues of their ancestors out of solid rock and then move and erect them at all points of the island coast?

Why were the Moai facing inland? Why did they suddenly stop carving the Moai, leaving their tools where they fell on the ground in favour of a Birdman cult, based on the winner of a yearly Triathalon-type competition. How did the islanders survive with no fresh water supply? Did they wantonly destroy all their natural resources, as modern day environmentalists claim?

Read the trials and tribulations of the two brothers' expedition to the island, far from mainland South America, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Follow their often amusing twists and turns as they explore the now barren and windswept land.

Consider their views on how the culture might have grown and died, the ways and beliefs of the community living on the island now and how they try to keep the old traditions alive, preserving what remains of the relics of their past cultures, the struggle of a small community with limited resources, highly dependent upon tourism yet grappling with twenty first century expectations.
