This is a soldier's story, from basic training to running a marathon, from studying first aid to prison, from boxing to close protection, to the SAS and to hostage rescue, to Mi6 and undercover spy work. It is a very long and progressive story over many books, more than a million words. Follow Wilco as he moves from basic training in the RAF Regiment to the SAS, to SAS counter-terrorist operations in Northern Ireland, to SAS hostage rescues in West Africa and elsewhere, to illegal mission for Mi6 and the CIA. The book is technically, geographically and historically accurate.
Wow, I can't believe there are people who gave this book 5 stars! Okay, I am no literary critic( i did read hundreds of books though, and a lot of them in this genre) and this one definitely goes at the bottom part of the list. First and foremost the authors writing style. It is not good. Prose is dull, unimaginative, workmanlike, with chronic case of tell don't show. There are typos, grammatical errors, even sentences that do not make any sense. Story and our main character are so stupid and unbelievable that I was crying laughing most of the time. This book is mans wet dream I suppose, we would all want to be like our main character. We would all want to be this successful but author overdone it. And not a little but A LOT! So much that this books read more like fantasy fiction on top of fantasy. Wilco is a combination of Mohamed Ali, Usain Bolt, Bratt Pitt, Stephen Hawking, Oxford style doctor and lawyer... oh, and James Bond too. It is soo redicilious that you can't help yourself but laugh. Look, I love strong and capable characters but dude! He is amazing at everything he does, not just good, amazing. He can't be average at anything, let alone fail. He have no competition of course and thats why people hate him. And the situations author invents for our mc, hahahahahahahhaha. I am sorry, but there is no other way to describe it. People need a new name to invent for Wilco, "Marry Sty" doesn't cover it by a long shot. There is so much more bad to tell but i will stop here. I really believe you should skip this book whomever you are. I always give my fellow readers benefit of the doubt, because we do all have different tastes in books we read. But to give this book anything more than 3 stars ( some people could enjoy it as a light read, there is light porn for others too), which I already find is way to many, is redicilious! Trust me on this one, and skip it!
Better than much of the so-called realistic military fiction, and some reviews here seem odd since this is entertainment, not a technical manual on the military. I hated the people who bothered Wilco, which is good writing - I got behind the main character and wanted him to succeed. Good humour, fast paced, and I hate SAS books where the main character fails a lot and shoots just two enemy soldiers. I never give five stars to anything, hence four here, based on the entire series rather than just book 1. Later books are much better.
Wilco is going to be a hurting unit when older if he lives that long
As former military, I really enjoyed these stories, this is a review covering the first five books. Don’t know the specifics of British military so I can’t comment on the accuracy but the overall attitudes of military is spot on to what I have experienced in my 22 years in the US Army. Other reviews have criticized books but author states in the first pages that this is not normal day to day and that it is fiction.
Like it say on the cover. Not an Andy McNab or a Tom Clancy. But one hell of a great read. A bit to much sex for my liking but when you look at it as a young fit soldier well then it's nothing that you wouldn't expect. I thought it was going to be something else but was really really happy that I started to read it,read it in a 14 hour period and loved everything about it. Can't wait for book 2.
A good read! Wilco is starting his basic training and this is an intriguing introduction to later books. It's well written with a style that tells you the author has both knowledge and experience, that definitely adds authenticity. Clearly more to come from the character, possibly the only positive to come from having been to stay at home due to the pandemic. Book 2 beckons! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wilco-Lone-W...
English is not my first language but I did a degree in English so read many English books, military history. Lone wolf was a long book, it kept me interested, a lot of history and technical facts, and the team of men grow, are killed, some join and some leave, so it is like a family story ongoing. Looking forwards to more books in this series.
This author just has it all, talent, knowledge, tactics, humor, imagination. I’ve been searching for ten years, read hundreds of series it seems, to finally unearth the 5 star series of relatable fact/fiction. I am so grateful that he keeps the saga going…I don’t know how he does it, but I’m certainly happy he does. Currently on book 26 and I’m still hooked. Thank you.
Good story from the start and continued through the finish. While the story is military based, any member of the military would know that this is fictional, especially from the enlisted point of view.
Not my usual choice of reading but found it very entertaining although a bit. brutal in parts , funny in others overal a really good read look forward to book no2
If you want a hero a bit different to the norm then Wilco is it. Yes it is a bit far fetched, he's brilliant at everything he does, women included. I can't wait to start the next book today.
The novel moves along at a good clip, and keeps one’s attention very effectively. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes. Needs some proof-reading to catch some basic understandable typos and errors, but very forgivable.
Excellent read, couldn't put in down. Yes, it's not totally realistic but it clearly states it is fictional and having read many, many books, there are few that I have enjoyed more. My only critisism is that it needs to be proof read as there were many typo errors but that did not detract from my enjoyment. Book two is as good and am currently on book three! Well done Geoff Wolak.
I have read all 30 of the Wilco books several times now. I have also read all his other books as well. Geoff to me is a master story teller. The writing style is easy to read and none of his books are ever boring. I would give the Wilco series a 10 out of 5 simply for the enjoyment of it. I have read other books recommended as similar to Wilco, but none can hold a candle to Wilco. Maybe it is because while accurate it is the what if or I wish factor that makes the books so much fun.
I recommend the Wilco series as well as his other books for people who want to escape reality without having to read sci-fi or fantasy.
As far fetched as shit from China! Ron's marathons every day before breakfast then does a days work! Knocks everyone out and kills people in boxing matches! Works for MI6 in his spare time. It is total bullshit. Author hard a very vivid but unbelievable imagination.
A great start for a story. Fills in the character (larger than life and twice as tough), the initial training, and sets up the following chapters. Thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to more.
