I liked Lynch's 'The Ponzi Man'' and this seemed interesting. It was a bit of a disappointment, especially after the reviews about the incredible writing about AA and alcohol.
No such thing unless you live in a bubble. I don't like this character, self indulgent which is ok as the best definition of an Alcoholic I heard was * An egomaniac with low self esteem " but his talking about the 12 steps of AA while clearly not getting it or practicing the program seems ridiculous. He seems delusional or someone who apparently went to a few meetings for research. He seemed to know the lingo but the idea that a lot of the men are violent to women seemed to be an assumption. He has a dark secret which to be honest didn't seem to be in character and yet it lacked a depth of emotional articulation. The fellowship of AA comes across well in an undefined way while the actual men fail to live up to that same responsibility of fellowship.
It let down what it was trying to do I think.
His love interest l! An Irish Spanish/Black wealthy aristocrat who sells her fashion genius from a landed gentry house who has a drinking problem. Could you stretch anything further ? Oh yeah he's writing a MUSICAL which is fine but he can't even face that without calling it a TUNER.! I couldn't read the word at any stage without being annoyed..
I've read much better drinking books but if you are going to read something by him check out his other novel.

A very insightful story about a writer and his weekly meetings at AA. It's not for the weak-hearted though. A beautifully written account of an alcoholic's life.
Read
July 13, 2026Short novel on a man who starts with his last drink in a bar and last drink in a bar. Dark but genius, very irish which makes it more relatable. Ultimately a sad story about how a bad event can cause someone to come tumbling back down. Brilliant descriptions of the characters and an interesting insight into Irish rock and roll.

probably not for the faint hearted! it was very good though, a journey of a man, trying to over come his drink problem, alot of sexual content throughout the book, but was rooting for him to beat the demon drink. read on..!
