A top-secret U.S. laser that can etch the entire NORAD defense computer on a chip has been stolen and is on its way to Russia.
The laser is a high-tech threat capable of neutralizing United States defense capacity, and the President authorizes Able Team to take "any action necessary" to block the transshipment. It's a computer end game and a new war - a Tech War.
The boys travel to Sri Lanka to recover a top secret laser that was stolen by n uptight Englishman who plans to sell it to the Russians for gold. Needless to say that the team is not on board with this. They team up with an officer in the Sri Lankan national air-force, which is a proper by the rules, but wants a better life for himself kind of guy. So the enemy might be closer that the team thinks.
This one, believe it or not, plays for more laughs than usual. The body count is surprisingly low. This book comes in at 186 pages. Not much violence occurs until we reach page 100. That's not to say this is dull. There is a lot of cloak and dagger stuff. Plotting and back biting. It keeps things rolling along.
Fast paced, non stop action, lots of weapons descriptions and violence. Pretty much business as usual then for any entry in the ‘mens action-adventure’ genre … this time time around though although this is enjoyable in a pulpy z-movie throwaway style it was really lacking something for me. Still okay for a quick read before going back to work after the New Years break. The main characters were as usual in the series, although Lyon’s was even more of a stereotypical American hating everyone not American extreme right wing personality. The plot such as it was is little more than an expanded (very stretched out) climax to a whole other story …. it might have worked better if the main plot seen here had been condensed into 30-40 pages and then some other story follows straight on.
Overall it wasn’t that different to any other entry in the series but this felt ‘off’ to me for a few reasons. Anyone not family with this sub-genre will absolutely hate this book whereas I found it disappointingly bad.
A solid entry to this series, yes it's a thin plot with just enough threads to keep the action moving but that's the genre. The plot puts the group in Sri Lanka trying to find stolen US military hardware which is suppose to come through on its way to being sold to the Russians. Only thing is that the enemy knows they are there so they have to stay alive while waiting on the shipment.
Again thin plot but I recommend. It's an easy read with lots of action and can be read as a solo book.
