"Be the light in the darkness."

I thought I knew everything there was to know about myself.

That I was simply your average crazy chick hiding behind a mask of normalcy.

When my illusions start blending into reality, I have to accept my brand of crazy might be a little different than most.

I never asked for any of this. I never wanted to see the demons in my sleep, and I definitely didn't want to see them hiding behind faces of people around me.

But when the monsters from my nightmares take someone I love, I'm forced to put on my big girl pants and face them.

I just hope when I remove this mask I've worn my entire life, I don't become one of them.

A YA with some raw topics that might not be suitable for younger readers. Intended for ages 16+

I voluntarily reviewed this book and I have not been compensated in any way.

Andi just wants to be normal - instead she feels other people's emotions and is having dreams about killers. Then life gets even more complicated when she starts to accept the truth about what she is and who the people are who are in it. When someone she loves is taken by evil can she face the Fallen?

I loved this story. I started out just describing a teenager with a few abilities and then quickly moved up to a good old battle between good and evil. The writing was good and the descriptions of the people, places and emotions were quite full and with the right level of detail so I could understand and empathise with everything. I was routing for Andi and the other characters in the story - now I just need to know what happens next.

First and foremost, I must confess that books involving angels and nephellim are my least favorite paranormal reads. Why? Well, most of the so called angelic creatures are far from what my idea of angelic is all about. Yet, I decided to give "Soul Mark" a try. As a rule, I don't mind a read that is written on the dark side. However, it has to have some bright moments or levity included as well. Unfortunately, "Soul Mark" stayed on the dark side way too long for my liking. I even wondered from time to time if I would be able to finish it. In the end, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Andi has known she was adopted all of her life. That never interfered with her feeling loved by her adoptive parents and brother Eddie. Andi also knows that she is strange. She has a white streak in her hair, a birthmark of sorts and most of her classmates look upon her with disgust. It doesn't help that the boy she has been dating for years walked out of her life as well as her best friend. Despite all of this, the one thing that Andi struggles with the most is the visions she has. She sees people's deaths, demons and other heinous creatures.

When Andi's roommate, Sara gets accepted to nursing school, Andi decides it is time to move on with her life as well. She and her brother, Eddie move to Florida to start on a path of a new life. Pretty soon, Reed, a boy she has grown to trust moves down to Florida as well. As they grow closer, Andi discovers that Reed has been keeping secrets from her and now she doesn't know who she can trust. Then, the unthinkable happens, her brother is killed in a car accident. Now, Andi is back home with her mother barely able to function.

When Andi dreams of a missing girl and she locates her in the forest, she realizes that she may have found her true calling. What she doesn't know is that her life is tied to a prophecy where light and darkness will battle for control. The question is which side will she choose.

As I stated earlier, this book was too dark and left very little hope for the main character. We see Andi going from one bad situation to another and just when we think she is coming out of it, the author reveals other dark events from her past. I found myself asking, "Why am I even reading this?" There are way too many plots and subplots in this story as well as characters with multiple names and identities. Sometimes, simplicity is best! It makes for a cleaner read. Needless to say, I will not be going on to the other books in this series. It just wasn't for me.

Soul Mark pulls the reader into the story immediately with a very youthful insight into the world as Andi begins to understand that she is not on the same level as her peers. When tragedy after tragedy happen she begins to wonder if something bigger is at stake than just a simple battle of good vs evil. When a simple act of goodness starts a roller-coaster of events that lead to secrets being revealed that have a chance to make or Andi. She will have to decide if she will allow her anger to force her toward the people who have been plotting her life or if the light inside her will enough to survive? This story is left with a cliffhanger ending.

As an author of novels about angels, I was very interested to read this first novel in the Soul Mark series, and can say I was pleased to have been introduced to it. C. L. Fennell writes with an emotional rawness that works well with the story, introducing new characters that the reader wants to see return in future books. The book is aimed at the young adult, with the associated angst which can be a little uncomfortable at times because of its realness, but I'm very much looking forward to the next book, and following where this trilogy goes.
