I was interested in this dissertation (published as a book) because it considers what it would mean for Paul to be intentionally vague when giving pastoral directives.

Braxton tries to show that Paul is ambiguous enough in this passage and a few others that not only us but the original reader would have been promoted to ask “what do you mean, Paul?” While I disagree with his conclusions (he thinks Paul’s thoughts are simply not formed yet on the matter) I do think there’s some interesting questions about rhetoric to ask here. Isn’t there room for speaking with some ambiguity when you are trying to get the reader to consider the solution for themselves?

It seems Paul is trying to get across the principle of the gospel and the law of love more than he is trying to prescribe a particular directive. The key to this would be that now the Corinthians must decide themselves what love and the gospel dictate in each situation themselves. I believe Paul does this in several other passages as well. The implications for what it means that we too have the Spirit of God are interesting. Thankful for his work even if it wasn’t well received in the commentaries.
