With their relationship picking up momentum, Maria and Rod travel to Arizona for his class reunion. While there, a terrible discovery in the Superstition Mountains lands Rod in jail and Maria in a panic, unsure of whom she can trust. Rod’s old law school professor? Former classmates? His defense attorney? Or the leader of mysterious Keepers? Like Maria, everyone seems to be hiding their own dark secrets. But if she can’t uncover the truth, Rod will never make it out of Arizona alive.
Lois Brown’s love of all things fantastical began at an early age when her five older brothers made her watch television shows such as “Dr. Who” and “Lost in Space.” (Yes, the originals.) Her passion for science fiction continued when, at age 12, she spent an entire summer buying “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” collector cards. She used her babysitting money earned over an entire year to get a full set. Now she likes to write her own books that spark the imagination. Her first novel, CYCLES, was a top 5 finalist of The Kindle Book Review’s “Best Indie Books of 2012.” She has recently appeared on televisions shows such as "Montezuma's Treasure" aired on the History Channel 2 in connection with her latest release, ROBBED OF SOUL
I enjoyed this second in the legends of treasure series. I like the main characters of Maria and Rod, and am interested to follow their slowly developing relationship. I also like the supporting character Beth. The mystery was well done, and I was engaged to keep reading. I did think some of Maria's actions were on the foolish side. Overall, well written and well edited. I'm a fan of this author.
Clever as always, Brown weaves a tail about ghosts and a hidden treasure set in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. So much detail and history I struggle telling fact from fiction. I read the first book and love how this sequel advances the romance while upping the stakes of the plot. I almost bit my fingers down to the skin from suspense! Highly recommend this book, especially if you appreciate an unpredictable, killer ending.
Wow. Both Book 1, and this one were IMPECCABLE. Brown writes with both clarity and richness, which is not easy to do. It seems as if authors always get stuck between short sentences versus long, details versus brevity. The way this is always solved with Brown is simply good taste. The story is "believable" in the midst of huge fantasy elements, as well.
In this book, you will enjoy the fact that it's a sequel. You will enjoy seeing where the relationship between Maria and Rod goes. You will enjoy the current mystery. You will also be shocked at some of the small surprises/ twists.
I received a copy of Skeltons Among Us by Lois D. Brown in exchange for an honest review. Note: the review contains spoiler! The backstory give in the first book of the Legends of Treasures series, Robbed of Soul, will make some of the situations in this book easier to understand. Rod and Maria are off to spend some time with Rod's buddies from law school hiking in the Superstitious Mountains. Before they leave Kanab, Maria has to rescue a boy trapped during a free climb. On the way down, she sees a ghost, not one of hers, but a ghost none the less. During dinner before the hike, Rod swears he sees his ex-wife outside the restaurant. The ex-wife who disappeared 6 years previously and Rod finally divorced. When he shows Maria a picture of Dakota on his phone, Maria informs him it was the ghost she saw the previous day. Then comes the hike that changes everything. Now that Rod knows his ex-wife is dead, he sees his life in a different light and is ready to make sure Maria is part of it. But nothing is ever as easy as it seems. The ghost appears breaking the mood, the on the hike out, a headless skeleton is discovered. What appears to be the headless skeleton of Rod's ex-wife, Dakota. They find her driver's license, her wedding ring, and her journals detailing her fear of Rod and his uncontrollable temper. Once the authorities have been notified, Rod is arrested for Dakota's murder. Maria is in shock as much as Rod is. She had finally started to trust Rod, and his arrest appears to her as a complete lack of judgement on her part. But it is his slipping into insanity that scares her even more. From personal experience, Maria knows how and what causes neuroses and she knows Rod shouldn't be acting that way. In a race against time, Maria and her best friend Beth fight to find out what happened to Rod and who framed him for murder. Was it one of Rod's law school buddies? They all seem to have a reason of some kind. Their characters are so well developed, it is easy to understand why Maria doesn't trust any of them. And the story line is wonderfully created slowly weaving Rod and Maria together, apart, then back together. In the first book, Rod helped Maria face her demons, now she will help him face his. The ending was beautiful! You'll have to read this thrilling book to find out who did it and why!

I read an ARC of this ebook and am voluntarily reviewing It!
This is book 2 of a series which definitely gets under your Skin! A strong female heroine, a likeable male lead, and paranormal elements along with enough Suspense to peak and tweak my mystery genes. The setting in the Superstition Mountains, paired with the interesting Legend of The Lost Goldmine of The Dutchman & a group of old college buddies going on a weekend hike into the mountains, ramps up the drama. A missing persons case takes a dramatic turn, and all of the friends soon discover there are plenty of "Skeletons in everyone's closets!" Their spills, thrills and even chills along the way leads to the book's strong finish. A next time book is sure to be in this series' future, and I for one, can't wait to see where the ex-CIA Sheriff of this series, Maria, goes! I will be right there with her!
This book pretty much tied off the loose ends for Maria and Rod. Rod's past is brought forward and Maria is forced to race against time to solve the mystery so they can have their HEA. It is an enjoyable little mystery.
We've been waiting eagerly for Skeletons Among Us ever since we reviewed book one, Robbed of Soul. We knew it would be well written and interesting but we didn't expect it to be as completely enthralling and fascinating as it was. Read our full review http://wp.me/p5s62b-Rs to find out more of what we thought!
Well done! I hadn't figured it out like I usually do. You kept me guessing until the very end. The surprise twist at the end was brilliant. The continued character and relationship development of the two main characters is also terrific. This was an extremely well written and thoroughly enjoyable mystery/romance/historical novel rolled into one. I can hardly wait for the next one. Please write faster!
