Chasing Flames

Rate this book
Aydah Bell was happy in her normalcy; she was never the class clown or the sports hero, never the beauty queen or little Ms. Honor Student. One day, after a pointless family mini-vacation, Aydah returns to school and finds that her sheltered little world has turned upside-down. Besides the fact that she is beginning to crave raw meat, people are also disappearing.

Suddenly, an alarming disappearance in the quiet and serene city she calls home puts the whole town into high-alert. One of Aydah’s schoolmates vanishes during the weekend and is conveniently replaced by a newcomer. To Aydah’s surprise, the new boy is the completely beautiful and oh-so mysterious Liam Bailey.

Aydah finds herself drawn to Liam. He consumes her thoughts and she aches to be with him. In the mix of passion, jealousy, and hatred that follows, Aydah is too distracted to see the horrible fate headed straight for her.

Emily Fogle

Emily Fogle was born and raised in Southern California. Her dream and ultimate goal was to get her Masters degree in English and become a teacher with enough time to write, as well. However, she soon found out that the best dreams often come true when they aren’t planned. Instead of fulfilling her teaching goal, real life took over and she married the man of her dreams. She now has an amazing 7 year old son and a beautiful newborn son.
She dedicates the majority of her time taking care of her family, volunteering at her son’s school, and being a Cub Scout Den leader. And though she loves every minute of it, the thought of being a writer still tugs at her heart. So, after the busy days are done and everyone is finally sleeping quietly, she squeezes in time for all the other loves in her life: the characters running wild inside her head.

Now, incredibly, her writing dream is also coming true. Her first novel, Dragon Wars, is being published by Anchor Group. Emily feels sincerely blessed to have been given so much in life and can’t wait to start the next chapter.

Mystery, intrigue, and emotions. Those are the best words I can think of, to describe this story.

The entire book is intriguing. Between the mysterious new guy in town, to the reaction he causes in Aydah, (not to mention her unique name), everything leaves you curious as to what's going on, and what's going to happen. Everything about this story begs you to keep reading, to find out more, and doesn't let your interest go, even after the last page. The mystery surrounding the people, events, and relationships is fascinating and awesome, keeps you guessing, and needing to know more.

The writing is really interesting. Coming from Aydah's point-of-view, and really, from right inside her head, the story plays out very much like a narrated film or play. We hear her personal thoughts, her reactions, and her emotions to everything that happens throughout the story. Filled with humor, goofy characters, and relationships that make you laugh, this book is sure to capture any reader, and give anyone an entertaining story.

This book certainly seems like the base and foundation for a longer and deeper story, and will hopefully continue in a series. I'd love to know what happens with these characters, and have the questions raised in this book, answered with a sequel. I would recommend this book to anyone, and will be keeping my eye out for a Chasing Flames #2.

Chasing Flames is Emily's second book. It follows Aydah a girl that's used being different. With her best friend Adam by her side, she has all she needs. That is until she meets the new kid in town, Liam, and her life suddenly goes from simple to strange. Adam and her parents start having whispered conversations when she's not around, people start disappearing and no one seems to like Liam or want Aydah around him.
This story is AMAZING! I absolutely loved it. The characters are so individualized the reader is easily swept into the story. I hung on every word, and the description, while a tad extensive, is written in such a way the reader will feel like they are there in the story experiencing everything Aydah does.
I think the only thing I would change would be the length of the chapters. I'm one of those readers that's intimidated by super long chapters and it will always take me longer to read a 200 page book with 20 page chapters than a 400 page book with 10 page chapters lol! I know not everyone is like that, but there are some of us that get a bit iffy about long chapters.
Other than the chapters being a bit longer than I'd personally like, the story is absolutely epic. It's beautifully written and I found no errors in it, that's always a plus in my book!
I can't wait to read Dawning Moon, which is the next in this series.

Aydah and her family live in a small community in the middle of a state forest (I'm jealous). She walks to school every day with Adam, a loner every bit as much as Aydah. Adam tells her a classmate and his family have moved and there's a new guy at school. Aydah can't get the new guy out of her mind. Seeing him for the first time in one of her classes, Aydah goes into full-blown 'oh my gosh he's so hot and I'm so nervous' mode.

Her attraction to Liam is instant and doesn't go unnoticed by Adam, who gets detention for fighting. Something about the new boy has not just Adam on edge, but both his family and Aydah's. Things are changing for Aydah and they don't make sense to her. A staunch believer in all meat must be cooked nearly to a crisp before being edible, she now finds raw meat smell amazingly appetizing. Her best friend is acting jealous, and she's having strange dreams.

Why have people begun to disappear? Do the disappearances have anything to do with Liam's arrival in town? Why does the wolf mask Liam gave her upset everyone? Who is Liam? Or maybe the question should be, why is Aydah so special to him? What is this secret her parents and Adam are keeping from her? Why are they afraid Liam knows something they don't?

Not only did Chasing Flames pulled me in fairly fast, but I've already reread the book a couple of times. For me, this was a relatively quick read. Adam began the story as her laid back friend she walks to and from school with who eats most of her lunch. By the end of the book, he was showing a meaner, darker side. I'm very curious about him as well as the other people surrounding Aydah.

I've read one other book by this author. Fogle is now two for two. Keep your eye on her; I have a feeling she's only just getting started. I will be checking weekly to see if the next book in this series is out. 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Chasing Flames starts out as the story of a typical teenage girl who meets and instantly falls for the new guy in school who is also interested in her. Aydah’s feelings and obsession with Liam are the focus of the book and everything else is incidental.

Emily Fogle’s writing is easy to read and flows well although the descriptions were a little too detailed (but that’s my personal preference).

I kept waiting for something major to happen but, even though things were hinted at, nothing specific ever really did happen. There were people in town disappearing and that was not resolved. Adam and Aydah’s family were keeping a secret from her and part of the secret was revealed by the end of the book, just by what was going on, but they never did explain anything to her. Hopefully there will be another book after this one that will resolve some of these mysteries.

Chasing Flames is a good book for young adults especially since it keeps your interest and it has no gore or sex like so many in this genre do.

After finishing reading this book, you can tell it’s part of a series and there are still loads of unanswered questions. It doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger as such, just didn’t give away as much as I would have liked and felt more like an intro to the series, characters and storyline.

Its excellently written, and I couldn’t fault the writing style or flow of the book, but I will admit at times I was thinking if this book is going where I think it is then been there, done that. Thankfully, after finishing Chasing Flames, we’re still at the unknown and to be honest, I have no idea where it’s headed now (I hate predictable so this is perfect for me). Its intriguing and so easily read, you’ll soon find yourself at the end wanting to know when the next book is out.
