While Earth is under fire from a monstrous race of aliens called the Reves, a second race of aliens, the Flieursk, save a handful of humans, among them a sister and brother. Twenty-two years later, Orestes Chase has worked his way up the political ladder of his new home in hopes of someday freeing the humans still on Earth from the Reves. His sister, Sophronia, has attempted to leave her humanity behind, becoming the newest star-fighter pilot in the Flieursk military.
During an unsanctioned journey to Earth, Sophronia and her squadron find themselves being hunted by the Reves and their hired bounty hunters after rescuing human rebels from Earth. While they fight for their lives, Orestes is caught in a web of deceit with the Reves Autocrat, Temus, whose master plan is to take over more than just Earth.
Orphans of War is a shot across the bow of the ship of any fan of modern Science Fiction. It blasts off right from the opening page taking the reader on not only a journey across the stars, but a journey of the imagination. What Shannon Miller has done is take what could have been a run of the mill Sci-Fi story of good guys versus bad guys, and elevated it by layering in elements of not only Sci-fi, but political intrigue, nuanced and complex three dimensional characters, and a villain that this reader LOATHED! I will not spoil anything, but I will say this...There is more going on under he hood than is revealed in this first volume. Orphans of war follows in the tradition of Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, and The Last Starfighter, (with a tiny bit of Game of Thrones sprinkled in for seasoning) Though it may have been inspired by these great works of Science Fiction, (and fantasy) it is by no means derivative, and never falls into parody. Orphans of War stands on its own to bring the reader into a world that is both familiar and new all at the same time. It sets the stage for what I can only imagine is going to be one hell of an adventure in the novels to come.
I don’t usually go for science fiction, but I thought I’d give a local author a try. I’m so mad at myself for not reading this sooner. It was like watching a movie in my head, and I got very attached to a few of the characters. Nothing about the context was confusing or hard to follow (even for me, who thinks Star Wars is confusing), and i genuinely can’t wait for the sequel to be published!
